Cracker of a game to start the finals series.

Roosters led 14-0 after 26 minutes, Broncos fought back to lead 18-22 with just 7 minutes to go.

Fantastic try from 20 year old Latrell Mitchell levelled the match for the roosters with 5 minutes remaining and a conversion made it 24-22.

Last night I was set ... Partner putting the kids to bed, beers a chilling.

The tip was Roosters 1-12 ... but I couldn't bet against the Broncos (I used to play my footy at their home ground).

    @ 14 - 0 ... I was slumped in my chair and sliding south.

Broncos try before 1/2 time lifted the beer and the spirits and prayed for a 2nd with seconds before oranges.

Late in the second half, when the Broncos hit the lead with 10 to go, I think a downed a beer in 2 gulps.

But the 'D' was gone and, as Tis Me says above, a great solo effort from Latrell Mitchell put the Broncos and me to bed.
To out muscle 'Jimmy the Jet' was a great effort and the Fullback attempt to stop him was piss weak
    from the stand-in full back.

Thought z z nnVB ... (note to self ... don't leave a post open and the kids near the computer ... and turn your back )

OH yes ... thought Benji had a great game in a losing side.
Still, proud of the boys and they play @ home (Lang Park) next week.
Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago ...

^Even when they're having an "off game" they still looked like scraping home for a win, and that was an off game!. Defence is what killed them (33 missed tackles is suicide) and without Boyd running that department it looked like organised chaos at the back. Just shows how valuable a good #1 is in this game, I hope he's available next week...

Are they ever!. All fantastic and entertaining games to watch (how the fuck can anyone watch snooze-fest Rugby Yawnion when this game exists?) but the Cows winning was the icing on the cake. Nobody gave them any chance - including me - but against all odds they rolled the Sharks and Flanno is up the refs for the rent .

Who knows what will happen this week in what should be comfortable wins for the 2 home teams (Bris 1.40 vs Panthers 3.00 & Eels 1.38 vs Cows 3.10) but there's no disputing things can go unexpected ways in sudden death football. We all just saw that happen last weekend.

Steady-on, it's still the game they play in heaven!

I'm picking this one for the upset. No allegiances to either team or real reason other than just a feeling and that Nathan 'Son of' Cleary being a pretty special fecking player. When I first saw him I thought he was only in there because of his dad but he has gone from strength to strength. Still only 19 too!!

And from the sublime to the comical...

I'm supposed to be playing league in November, oddly enough for Chiang Rai against a Chiangmai selection as a curtain-raiser to the Thailand vs. South Australia game and as a prop!!

It has the potential to be an utter fucking farce. Me, not the game... Although that kinda depends on just how shit I am too I suppose.

Not the NRL, but the next tiered competition, the QLD Cup

PNG Hunters seeking their first-ever Queensland Cup rugby league title

A Papua New Guinea rugby league team has captured the hearts and hopes of its nation with a chance to win Queensland's state competition.
The PNG Hunters only joined the Queensland Cup in 2014 and will play in their first grand final this coming Sunday in Brisbane against the Sunshine Coast Falcons.

The team dominated the Queensland state competition, winning the minor premiership and captain Ase Boas the best and fairest.
Boas said the team already felt like winners before the grand final.

"[It will be our] first time running out [on Lang Park] and making history for a PNG team to run out there," he said.

"My feeling is that it's a great achievement for me to make it to the grand final and running out, leading the team out will be a great feeling that day.
Despite finishing strongly in previous seasons, the Hunters have bombed out in their finals appearances.
Their victory in a home semi-final triggered frenzied celebrations in Port Moresby's National Football Stadium.

    More here

Rugby League is almost a Religion in PNG and the NRL high profile players attract God like status.

    Following on ...

    From a previous year

Mal Meninga has named six debutants as part of the Australian Prime Minister's XIII to take on Papua New Guinea Prime Minister's XIII
in Port Moresby on Saturday 23 September.
Valentine Holmes, Andrew Fifita, Api Koroisau, Dylan Walker, Jack Bird and Paul Vaughan will take their place in the team travelling to PNG
next week, with the match to be played at the National Football Stadium in the nation's capital.

A further six players in the squad represented the Kangaroos in the ANZAC Test match earlier this year, with Tom Trbojevic the only player
yet to have played a representative match at senior level.
With a little more than a month to go until the Rugby League World Cup, Meninga said the annual invitational match would be used as a
genuine selection trial for players pushing for spots in the Kangaroos' World Cup squad.

"I'm absolutely delighted with this team. We've chosen the best available players in each position with fifteen of the eighteen players
having represented their State already," Meninga said.

"To get these guys together so close to the Rugby League World Cup is a real coup for our preparations, which will really kick into gear
    following the NRL Grand Final.

"Some of them have been fortunate enough to have already experienced playing in PNG, but for the new guys, it really is something to cherish. There's nothing else quite like it.
"I'm looking forward to seeing how everyone gels together in a short timeframe and handles the occasion."
Meninga also confirmed Wests Tigers captain Aaron Woods would skipper the Prime Minister's XIII.

"Aaron has been a fantastic leader at club and state level for a number of years now and has fully earned this honour," Meninga said.
"I'm looking forward to seeing him lead from the front on Saturday week against an always tough, physical and entertaining Papua New Guinea Prime Minister's XIII team."

The Prime Minister's XIII will also be involved in a series of events alongside the Harvey Norman Jillaroos including community visits and coaching clinics while on the ground in Papua New Guinea and are supported by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT).

    Australian Prime Minister's XIII squad

    1. James Tedesco (Wests Tigers)
    2. Dane Gagai (Newcastle Knights)
    3. Josh Dugan (St George-Illawarra Dragons)
    4. Tom Trbojevic (Manly Warringah Sea Eagles)
    5. Valentine Holmes (Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks)*
    6. Jack Bird (Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks)*
    7. James Maloney (Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks)
    8. Aaron Woods (c) (Wests Tigers)
    9. Api Koroisau (Manly Warringah Sea Eagles)*
    10. Andrew Fifita (Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks)*
    11. Tyson Frizell (St George-Illawarra Dragons)
    12. Josh Papalii (Canberra Raiders)
    13. Jake Trbojevic (Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles)
    14. Wade Graham (Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks)
    15. David Klemmer (Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs)
    16. Dylan Walker (Manly Warringah Sea Eagles)*
    17. Josh Jackson (Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs)
    18. Paul Vaughan (St George-Illawarra Dragons)*

    *Denotes PMXIII debut
    Coach: Mal Meninga

    Here

EDIT:- Just realised the best of the PNG side will be playing in the QLD Cup Final

The Papua New Guinea Prime Minister's XIII to take on Australia in Port Moresby next Saturday has a very unfamiliar look about it,
with none of the first choice PNG Hunters available because their Intrust Super Cup Grand Final will be played in Brisbane the next day.

Several of the 18 strong squad have Hunters connections, including Karo Kauna Jr, Muka Peter Kulu and William Mone, but the bulk
of the side has been chosen from the Digicel Cup teams, including five from the 2017 champions Lae Snax Tigers and four from
    runners-up Agmark Gurias.

Tigers' coach Stanley Tepend, and the Gurias' Steve Nightingale will take charge of the squad in the absence of national coach
Michael Marum who will be on duty with the Hunters.

^Exactly. Sounds like poorly thought-out timing to hold such a game, both teams are made up of the 2nd tier players from both nations.

David I really did like your vomit emicon when mentioning Aaron Woods, he's the most overrated forward in the game and is just an oversized teddy bear who almost looks scared as he ambles up the opposition and turns his back for impact. He does manage to get some offloads in, but that's his only saving grace. It must be embarrassing for him watching the way real big men cart it up, and there's no better example of fearless ball carriers than Taumalolo right now.

North and south of the NSW Boarder, they care a lot.

The best Grand Final on the modern era (since I donned the boot) was widely acclaimed as that fought out by the Cowboys and the Broncos.

Where does the 2015 decider rank on the all time list of grand finals?

After much reflection, I have it number one – but only just ahead of 1989.

And there are plenty of factors that contribute to that.

First of all, my experience of taking in grand final day stretches back as far as 1973. I've haven't missed watching one since.

Until Sunday night, I rated 1989 between Canberra and Balmain on top ahead of 1997's ARL decider between Newcastle and Manly.

^Warriors get Adam Blair from the Broncos and Tohu Harris from Storm next year, 2 more Internationals to go with the flock of them already in the team. They've got a good coach and a ridiculously stacked roster so if they don't play finals football as an absolute minimum achievement in 2018, the fans would be within their rights to blank them forever. And I'd really like to see their books to find out how they've got so many rep players and manage to stay under the salary cap, no doubt the NRL legal beagles are all over that...

Anyway onto the GF and I've backed the Cows at the line (+10). Storm should win of course, but you just know the Cows will fight till the death and I don't think it'll be a high scoring game.

That's pretty much what they said about this year after acquiring RTS, Issac Luke and Foran mate.

There's something incredibly wrong at the Warriors and it's not about talent. Quite telling that so many ex-Warriors players thrive elsewhere.

If he was still there we might've even had Jnr playing for the Warriors!

GF was probably the most boring game of the NRL's entire season.

Storm are a great winning side, but not really very entertaining.

It was all a bit predictable, there was only ever going to be one winner really.

Still they deserved it. Be interesting to see what happens with only two of the 'Big Three' still there.
