The biggest problem seems to be a lack of steel in the midfield.

Yes, I was thinking particularly of defensive midfielders.

What is it with this 'curse of the midfielders' at the arsenal?

Arteta wasn't the only one who had a bad game. The Ox was mostly anonymous, Ozil was left isolated most of the time, as you say Wilshere spent must of the game kicking and being kicked, Cazorla worked his nuts off but rarely did anything useful with the ball, and Arteta is no screening midfielder.

If you look at the goals that didn't come from set pieces, they all came from Arsenal giving the ball away in exposed areas.

Play that midfield against Palace by all means, but it certainly wasn't up to it yesterday.

And it would be remiss not to say that Liverpool won the ball with some excellent pressing, they were far more up for it.

And just when Wenger thought his day couldn't get any worse.....
