"The Knick", a 10 episode TV drama centred around the workings and people of a New Yorks city hospital (The Knickerbocker) in the early 1900's. The first 3 episodes of 10 for the first season are available for download now (Cinemax has announced there will be a second season). So far it's been excellent.

Continuing the trend for prominent film actors migrating into quality TV shows, Clive Owen is the lead as the Chief Surgeon who battles personal and professional demons.

I know I've said this before, but having just finished all five seasons of "Southland", I reiterate that it's about the best cop series I've seen in years.

Some have been put off by comments that it is "censored". This is a very occasional bleeped out word, hardly distracting unless you have the concentration level of a fruit fly.

It is also a bit slow loading. I just downloaded overnight.

    Highly recommended.

On season 2 now. good show, but would put anyone off joining the LAPD, if it was really that bad.

    I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Have you seen the film End of Watch?

Filmed in a similar way and about cops in the LAPD.

A friend of mine was a cop in Compton and LAPD; it's that bad.

'End of Watch' is a very good movie.
'Harsh Times' with Christian Bale is also worth watching.

You're welcome, Harsh Times is a bit of a slow burner, but very tense.
Here's another very good one in a similar vein from Brasil.

I watched season 1 but the characters didn't really come alive for me. Would you say season 1 was weaker than the rest?

I am on Mad Men 3. I nearly didn't bother after season 1 but season 2 was great and I am hooked now.

Just started watching Brideshead Revisited from 1981 again for the first time in a few years. It is a timeless masterpiece. It has a dreamlike quality that just never gets old. The first episode is worth watching just for John Gielgud's hilarious extended cameo as Charles Ryder's father.

It occurred to me while I was watching it that it is set at the same time as Boardwalk Empire which I am also watching at the moment. It is funny to see the contrast in cultures and style. It has none of the up to minute directorial trickery and drama of a recent production but it has a mysterious quality that draws you in.

Don't know, Loop. I personally always find the characters start to grow on me in any series in the second season.

A new series, looks promising, great first episode

A morally corrupt judge suffers a breakdown and believes that God is speaking directly to him, compelling him onto a path of vigilante justice.

Normally, I would do an instant pass on anything with religious overtones. But, because it was Dillinger, I gave it a shot. Great first episode! Well found.

For those interested in military matters, "Royal Marines Commando School" is an 8 part series covering the 32 weeks training of Royal Marines (all 8 episodes are now available).

Cheers PAG. As a former US Army Drill Sergeant in Basic Training, I found Episode One quite interesting.

Think I will watch the rest. Trying to find downloads with English subtitles, but no luck so far.

As en ex-Royal Marine myself, I was more than a little interested in the current training regime. Essentially the same as my day, with the physical intensity and mental pressure no different, and the final week of Commando tests exactly the same including the required pass times.

Apart from differences in the kit being used, and no doubt the tactical elements being taught, there seems to be much more emphasis on getting people fit again to continue after sustaining sometimes quite serious injury.

Favourite instructor expressions during my training were (amongst others) "pass me another recruit this one's split", and "if you can't take a joke you shouldn't have joined".
