Vantage Point: President Ashton (William Hurt) is attending a global war on terror summit in Spain. Thomas Barnes (Dennis Quaid) and Kent Taylor (Matthew Fox) are two of the Secret Service agents assigned to protect him. This is the first action that Agent Barnes has been in since he took a bullet for President Ashton six-month earlier. We really dont know if Agent Barnes is up to the challenge of protecting the President. Shortly after President Ashton is escorted to the stage in the plaza by the Secret Service, he is immediately shot twice by a rifle from a window and falls to the floor. The crowd is in shock and chaos breaks out all over, especially, when bombs begin to explode. Howard Lewis (Forest Whitaker) is an American video-taping the event to show to his children that he was actually there at this historic event. He believes that he has the picture of the man who shot the President. Agent Barnes sees the tape and has a clue to that person. Several different people witness the event, and only through their eyes do we see the truth behind the assassination attempt.

9/10 Top notch thriller - get same story through 5 diff eyes, until final act. Highly enjoyable.

    ONCE (2007)

I downloaded this on the strength of the song performed at the oscars from the movie (it won).
Absolutely magical movie made for less than 100,000 dollars that puts all the high budget American pap I've seen to shame.

The story is the simple one of a gifted musician who makes his crust busking on the streets of Dublin hooking up with a Czech immigrant girl and writing some seriously good music (written and performed by the 2 leads).

I really recommend this one and give it a huge thumbs up.

    10/10

Fuck me this is a classic slasher flick. Acting is not bad, plot is predictable but good.
Scenes in this movie will make your eyes water and balls ache

    30 days of night

Vampire movie, unusual, not the typical bang bang movie you would expect. Very quiet and erry, the vampire characters are quite scary, even though the movie is a bit slow and doesn't focus enough on the vampires who actually look great. Nice scenery and a few "interesting" camera shots.

    Not a keeper.

Despite a name that suggests some cheesy low-budget crap with people running away from non-existent creatures that are superimposed using low-tech means later, it's actually a (very) quirky and off-beat romantic comedy from New Zealand. More than a touch Napoleon Dynamite-ish but that's not such a bad thing if you're a fan of that kind of movie.

Interestingly enough the version I downloaded from Pirate Bay came with English subtitles - as it was the American release version this is presumably to ensure that US audiences could understand what was being said in the film. In English.

Oops, forgot to actually rate it: 8/10
Most Kiwi films (before Pete Jackson went blockbuster) have traditionally being dark & or strange. This fits the bill of a traditional NZ movie. Nothing OTT, just characters you might meet/have already met in everday life, in an everyday setting. This movie is incredibly funny if you imagine it's Ant playing the male lead.
Some people think it don't, but it be.

You've got a very odd sense of humour!

Incidentally have you seen him (Jemaine Clement) in 'Flight of the Conchords'? Brillaint, worth a download too.

My brilliant yet criminally ignored review from the other thread:

I have to say right off the bat that this quirky HBO comedy series might not be to everyone's taste, if for nothing else that the deadpan delivery mixed with the New Zealand accent can be hard to follow at times (something the show itself makes into an in-joke).

The series follows the trials and tribulations of a two-man novelty band (the titular 'The Flight of the Conchords') trying to make it in New York. It uses a unique method of the characters inner-monologe often being in the form of a music video (incidentally the album of the songs from the series has just won a Grammy).

The series itself is a bit slow to get going but by the third episode it's bloody hilarious in my opinion. The 'rap' they do as 'Rhymenocerous' and 'Hiphop-potomus' when confronted by muggers is klarse:

    Jemaine:
    They call me the hiphop-potamus
    My lyrics are bottomless...
    Bret (spoken)Is that it?
    Jemaine(spoken)Yeah

    Jemaine:
    They call me the hiphop-potamus
cause I got flows that glow like phosphorous
Poppin off the top of this oesophageus
Not because I'm a water dwelling mammal from Africa
    Called a hippopotamus I'm not a hippopotamus, I'm a hiphop-potamus
Where did you get the preposterous hypothesis that I was a hippopotamus?
    Did Steve tell you?
What's he got to do with it?
    Bloody Steve!!

    both guys:
    Other rappers diss me
    Say my rhymes are sissy
What, what, what, why, why, why?

    Jemaine:
Be more constructive with your feedback

    Bret:
My rhymes are so potent that in this small segment
I made all the lady listeners pregnant
Yeah that's right, sometimes my lyrics are sexist
But you lovely bitches know, should know
    I'm trying to correct this

Anyways a quirky and off-beat comedy that you'll probably either love or hate. Good torrent here for those that are interested: Flight of the Conchords - Season 1 (download torrent) - TPB

I have seen the trailer for 'Elizabeth - The Golden Age' and I find this very hard to believe. The movie is set in 1585 and the hovercraft was invented by Sir Christopher Cockrel in 1875.

Bank Job - A car dealer with a dodgy past and new family, Terry has always avoided major-league scams. But when Martine, a beautiful model from his old neighborhood, offers him a lead on a foolproof bank hit on London's Baker Street, Terry recognizes the opportunity of a lifetime. Martine targets a roomful of safe deposit boxes worth millions in cash and jewelry. But Terry and his crew don't realize the boxes also contain a treasure trove of dirty secrets - secrets that will thrust them into a deadly web of corruption and illicit scandal that spans London's criminal underworld, the highest echelons of the British government, and the Royal Family itself.

Excellent movie 9/10 Jason Strathan plays the lead role - lot of skull duggery going on. Highly enjoyable movie about this true robbery that shaked the foundation of the royals and british govt.
