    Wizard Of Lies (2016).

De Niro in a decent film for a change! Some of the crap he has starred in recently actually had me thinking he was a Bernie Madoff victim, and needed the cash.

Any way, here he is acting his socks off playing the creator of the biggest Ponzi scheme evah! Bernie Madoff. -Pretty amazing, factual account of just how far you can go with a pyramid selling technique if you have the requisite sociopath talents.
Overly related (and a bit too sympathetic) to Madoff's family, may be a criticism of the film. The people and major investors that he bilked are focused on much, other than angry hecklers at Madoff's trial. Great performances by De Niro and Michelle Pfiffer as his wife though.
    8/10.

I watched this sometime ago and enjoyed it. De Niro and Pfiffer were very good and it's a fascinating story.

I think the criticism of the film comes from the sympathetic treatment of Madoff and his family. Just remember that it's a 'tv movie', and a lot of Hollywood people got fucked over by his Ponzi scheme, and I imagine are still very bitter about it.

I thought it was a slightly above average movie, and worthy of a watch.

The biggest issue for me was, despite getting into character extremely well, it was De Niro's voice, every time he spoke it was like listening to De Niro in an interview.

Also around the beginning he had to explain what a Ponzi Scheme is to his wife (in case the audience didn't know), which was very poorly done.

You need to get over the "TV" bit.

A huge amount of content is being developed for that media now. Netflix, HBO (in this case), Amazon, etc.

It's no longer the domain of Hallmark soppy romance shit.

Going back in time a bit. One of the Coen brothers early films (1st one, I think) "Blood Simple".
Review the last film you watched-blood-simple-jpg
Ever present Francis McDormand stars as the errant wife of a bar owner, having a blatant affair with one of the staff. The bar owner hires a private eye, first to collect evidence of the affair, and receiving in flagranto photos from the mocking PI, secondly as an assassin to kill them both.
Visceral and brutally violent, but done with the black humour and wit that has become a trademark for most of the Coen's work. Not seen this film for over 30 years, glad I remembered how good it is.
    9.5/10 for me. Treat yourself.

War for the Planet of the Apes

I loved the 1st movie with its fascinating depiction of caesar grwoing up from a baby chimp and becoming the unruly adoclescent who eventually breaks from his human family.

The second one felt like a formulaic actioner and so does number 3.

Still worth watching if you like action movies.

    7/10

    Paint It Black

Visually striking nouveau-art-cinema-esque piece about the frenetic relationship between the GF and mother of a deceased artist.

It is a mood piece portrait more about texture than about any storyline.

I enjoyed it but I think Davis would struggle with this one so I am not going to give it a score!

    ?/10

Agree kmart by far DeNiro's best outing in a long time, good acting by Michelle Pfiffer as well. That p.o.s. messed up a lot of lives including his own family's. Hard to find sympathy for him.

I went to see The Foreigner yesterday, and was very impressed.

Good plot, (Jackie Chan's special forces trained character on the hunt for the terrorists who planted a bomb in London which killed his daughter. Pierce

Brosnan very good as the government official based in Northern Ireland who Chan believes knows the identity of the bombers), good action and good pace.

My first Jackie Chan movie and he does well. (At 63!)

It held my attention from beginning to end, a welcome antidote to the turgid Blade Runner 2049 I endured earlier this week.

    Recommended.

    Geostorm

New film about the future where weather controlling satellites go rogue and Gerard Butler travels to space to save the day. It's a turgid Hollywood movie, so he does.

Horrible characters, spot the pc moments which are so predictable and cringeworthy it might just make you wanna walk out.

Not one F-word in the whole film and out of a group of 16 nations who join up to save the earth, the US of A proudly does it.

Why didn't they get an english actor to play the Brit? This guys accent was terrible, anyone recall Don Cheadle in Oceans Eleven, but worse than that.

And of course only a woman can outrun an advancing 300mph ice storm that freezes people on contact in Brazil.

Horrible horrible fucking movie. It will be the typical feel-good Xmas day afternoon movie the kids and mum & dad can cheer along to.

Don't go and see it, please.

    Atomic Blonde (2017).

Well it's got Charlize Theron getting her kit off, and her in a lezzer scene.

Plus a load of quite well choreographed fight scenes.

But it's little more than something to watch if there's nowt else on. More style than substance.

    5/10

I just don't get the Coen brothers' stuff. I get slammed on TD for criticizing them, as a number of posters think they're gods of cinema. Oh well, different strokes.

Indeed. Fargo was excellent. I'd be fascinated if some kind poster could explain to me what made "Blood Simple" of any interest at all.

Fargo great as well as The Big Lebowski. Rest not my spec.

Just watched The Revenant. I liked it but my tastes are a bit weird so not for everyone.

While exploring the uncharted wilderness in 1823, frontiersman Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) sustains life-threatening injuries from a brutal bear attack. When a member (Tom Hardy) of his hunting team kills his young son (Forrest Goodluck) and leaves him for dead, Glass must utilize his survival skills to find a way back to civilization. Grief-stricken and fueled by vengeance, the legendary fur trapper treks through the snowy terrain to track down the man who betrayed him.
