Knocked up an Asian marinade of Soy Sauce, balsamic vinegar, grated garlic, sesame oil, and lemon juice. A few hours in the fridge while I think of what's going with it.

I was lucky enough to be invited into a friend's home for Iftar (the sunset meal when Muslims break the fast) with his family a couple of nights ago and what a spread his wife and daughters put on.

There are a couple of classic from the region: bamia, baba ghanoush, which was the best I've ever had by far, and mahshi (BB will know it as dolma- stuffed vine leaves, stuffed peppers and also stuffed potatoes). There was one thing that I'd never eaten before and that was called kolkas (basically a yam curry). I'm gonna try and dig that recipe out and give it a go because it was new to me and was right up my soi. Obviously, there's also a whole chicken, some salad stuff and mounds of flatbread too.
Then it was tea and dessert.

That's kunafa (knafeh) and some kind of fried sweet dough. I wasn't keen on the sweet dough, but the kunafa was tasty. I usually prefer it with cream though.
All in all it was a great night with some really good food.
Their breakfast sausages are excellent. The ones I go for if they're available. Never went for their beef.Quote:
