Teaching in the Phillipines - is it possible?

now I know this isn't really a teflers forum but what the roger....

anyone know if there's tefl work in The Phillipines - now I know English is quite widely spoken there but surely there must be some conversation jobs around? -

I went to the Phillipines for 6 months in the '80s and thought it was a great place - could be worth a try perhaps - maybe even a visa run although it's a bit far - any ideas on the cheapest air ticket?

Seems to be fairly well off the radar for teachers and tourists alike not sure why really -

as Torbers knows I can speak a few words of Tagalog ..

An interesting question and one I've never heard before.
Even though the Philippines is poorer than Thailand they also have a lot of rich fuckers who may want their kids to speak perfekt Inglish!

Worst part is the girls are such intense scammers they make the thais look like angels!

Forget the Phillipines CE. Its way to dangerous for someone like you sport. PM Crackerjack and ask him as he is married to a Phillipina and has been there. He is bound to know the answer to your questions and will almost certainly disagree with me about the dangers. I reckon that a bloke like you wouldnee last 2 weeks before being shot.

No, one can not teach English in the Philos land! Other subjects perhaps, butt it aint gonna be English. The natives there tend to think they kan speak American English so why do they need to recruit?

I visted the phillipines on a visa run in 1979.
I found the filipinos to be faux americans,I cringed when local kids in outback luzon or mindoro called out "hey joe" or "hey GI" to me,a kiwi.

not sure there's anything especially wrong with that - they have after all kicked the Americans out of their 2 military bases they used to have (Clark, Subic Bay ) I beleive -
I guess they just associate wealth with the US - they're like it here in Thailand really - I mean the richer wants tend to want farang things and wear suits etc..

Call it nonsense if you choose CE but The Phillipines is a haven for folks who see white skin and knobbly knees and feel compelled to have it away with your dosh. If they cant do it by shatrickery, they simply shoot you and rifle through your pockets while you lay bleeding.

Do a little google on Foriegner(sp) deaths in Phillipines. The whole idea is folly IMO. :CS:

A friend of mine is married to a Cebuano lass. When he was there a year or so ago he decided to buy himself a guitar, so off the two of them went to one of the many guitar shops on the island.

While they are checking out the guitars a car pulled up outside and the driver opened the boot, pulled out a machine gun and came into the shop with it.

He was trying to find a guitar case to hide the gun in (this was during the election when you can't carry guns in public). Unfortunately he couldn't get the gun in the case with the ammo clip attached and he wasn't prepared to take the clip of for some reason. During the negotiations the back door of the shop swung open and the gun guy caught sight of the owner's chickens out in the yard, on which he flicked off the safety and drew a bead on one of the chickens.

My friend said that time seemed to stop for him while he tried to decide whether to duck, run or just crap himself. Fortunately for one and all the guy decided not to have chicken for lunch that day and disappeared down the road to the guitar case maker to try and get something larger.
    Lord, deliver us from e-mail.

when you read the advice sections in Lonely Planet , tourist guides etc.. they make everywhere out to be dangerous - some of them even advise against going to Thailand as they reckon you'll likely be screwed over. I guess it's all about common sense.

I know a farang lady teaching there, she did contact me once for other teachers of English....so it is possible, although obviously not as easy as here.

yes, I reckon there must be a bit of work going as their national language is Tagalog - surely some of them would want to learn English from a 100% native speaker regardless.

The Phillipino teachers in Thailand seem to have a fairly bad reputation - is that because their English sucks?

I remember when I went there English was definitely NOT spoken in the streets - Tagalog all the way - in fact you could only have a very BASIC 'conversation' in tourist English - from what I hear this hasn't changed since the 80's .

I was there last year and I was on Leyte Island.
English was quite common, especially with anyone with an education.
There are quite a few horror stories coming out of the expat community but I suspect you'll never know if you never go!

Have a google on teaching English in the Philippines and get onto a forum to get more info.

Every Flippa I met spoke above average English (say, US level), so maybe they just need teachers to fine tune them and to get rid of that annoying accent.

The English laguage is a rich and evolving tapestry, vibrant with the linguistic music of many cultures.

And if we choose to insert new words like 'gerrof' 'wotsit' and 'innit' then we will.
