A body has been spotted in the sea off Phuket and efforts are being made to retrieve it, officials involved in a search for a missing tourist told Phuketwan soon after noon today.

Today's Updating Report

PHUKET: A major search on sea and land was underway off Phuket today for a female Australian tourist who went for a swim in the dark last night at Phuket's notorious Karon beach and vanished.

The woman, who had just arrived on Phuket for a holiday, told her travelling companion that she was going for a swim, even though it was 7pm and the sun had set.

The friend reported the woman missing last night when the first brief search began. Today, Thai Royal Navy, Marine Police, lifeguards and regular police were involved from first light in an extensive search.

Karon beach has claimed more lives than any other Phuket beach in recent years, with lifeguards aware of the dangers in daylight. At night, it's not safe to swim.

In this case Harry they would have had to have been lit up! That beach is deadly. All the Hotels and Tourist Stuff proclaim its beauty and wonderful swimming. Never seen any Tourist Information telling people that the place is a bloody death trap.

I wonder what hotel she was staying in. You could send them a fake email claiming to be her father, threatening to fill the hotel manager in for not doing enough to warn their guests.

It would probably have more effect than the inevitable deluge of indignant letters to the local rags.

Your so right there Sailing I,ve swam there along with Krabi and Rayong to and they all seem to have one hell of a backdraft to pull you in all the time . Funny how some of us seem to foget so quickly what our mother,s used to drum into us .

I just don't get it. You're staying in a nice hotel with this great looking swimming pool - with a bar in it - and instead you go and drown in the sea.

Unbelievable.

PHUKET: Rescue workers are searching for an Australian tourist reported missing at Karon Beach yesterday.

Jennifer May, 44, was staying with a friend at the Phuket Orchid Resort at the south end of Karon Beach.

The friend reported Ms May missing after she lost sight of her at about 6pm.

Karon Municipality rescue workers and volunteers from other agencies launched an immediate search and rescue mission, but were unable to locate the missing woman.

They called the search off at 10pm.

The search resumed this morning, but so far without success.

An aussie with a western name drowning in the sea? Something amiss there- most aussie's swim like fish, and know what to do when caught in a rip. Maybe she cramped or something. Tragic anyway.

Not really. Many people prefer swimming in the sea due to movement of the water, and find swimming pools boring.

I've a lovely pool in my condo but prefer going to the beach to swim in the sea for a day than sit at the pool. If they install a wave machine I might change my mind though.

Maybe she forgot that at 44 you can't swim like an 18 year old, and perhaps a few Mai Tais went down before she went for her final dip.

Either way, she would have been better of at the pool. There are better ways to get fucked.
