PATTANI, Feb 22 - A man was shot to death in the provincial seat of this southern province today while driving his motorcycle from home to the town centre.

Manase Gortae, 38, was shot three times in the face and his torso by presumed insurgents who followed him on another motorcycle. Mr Manase was sent to Pattani Hospital and was pronounced dead later.

An investigation is being held to indicate whether the incident was related to the ongoing southern insurgency. The police have not ruled out other motives such as personal conflicts.

In another incident in nearby province of Narathiwat, local forensic experts and police investigated the scene of an explosion in Yi-ngo district. A remote-controlled bomb weighing 5 kilogrammes was found hidden near a school.

Eleven soldiers of a teacher protection passed by the site on their patrol duty about 30 metres before the bomb exploded, but none were injured.
