    Thailand : Train Derailments

I was finishing up my bike ride last evening and had just passed through Baan Deua when I saw a bunch of people and some Rot Fai Thai (State Railways of Thailand) personnel on the side of the road. I looked up to the right and saw a passenger car derailed and sitting off to the side of the tracks.

I guess this accident took place last Friday while I was avoiding the TD gathering at Suan Lum.

It's hard for me to see how this single passenger car got derailed short of some catastrophic failure. The roadbed is flat and straight at the point and there is no grade crossing for at least a kilometer in either direction. According to one report the derailed car hit a pickup truck. I have no idea how the pickup truck got there as there are no roads anywhere near where the train car ended up.

Bangkok - Korat in one hour, is the moto

back of the main train station of Korat is one workshop for the carriages, they should just dump what they all have there actually, you cannot solve a 40 years of lack of maintainance...

The first time I took a train from Bangkok to Korat was in 2000. It was a very nice and new diesel rail car: air conditioned, comfortable seats, nice attendants, lovely lunch served and a comfortable ride.

    What the hell happened?

    Northern train derails; no injuries

(BangkokPost.com) - An express train running between Bangkok and the northern capital of Chiang Mai derailed on Saturday night in Phrae province, reports this morning said.

The accident occurred at around 6 p.m. The train was about to pull in to the station in Long district of Phrae province, when the last carriage of the train suddenly derailed.

Authorities said it was a technical problem that caused the derailing.

Emergency workers was dispatched to the site but no casualties were reported and operations resumed on the railway line three hours later.

The accident was eerily similar to another train derailment in the South last week, when the last car of a northbound train heading for Bangkok slipped off the rails.

Northern line reopens after train carriage derailment

SONGKRAN / HOLIDAY-MAKERS STREAMING BACK TO BANGKOK
Northern line reopens after train carriage derailment

Train services on the northern line resumed yesterday after the track was closed on Saturday night by a derailment in Phrae.

A carriage of the Chiang Mai-bound express train derailed between Ban Pa Kan and Ban Ping stations in Long district.

Railway work gangs had the carriage back on the track early yesterday.

The accident halted three overnight trains, State Railway of Thailand public relations chief Monthakarn Sriwilas said.

With the Songkran extra-long weekend in its last day tomorrow, holiday-makers have already begun streaming back from the provinces.

Extra buses have been sent to the provinces to carry people back to Bangkok, Transport Co acting managing director Wutichart Kalayanamit said.

Motorists have been advised to take alternative routes if possible when driving back to Bangkok, rather than staying on major roads such as the Asian Highway and Phahon Yothin road, where heavy traffic is expected to cause major congestion, said Department of Rural Roads deputy chief Wicharn Kunakulsawat. The network of minor roads also links Bangkok to many provinces.

Drivers from the Northeast are recommended to use a road in Lop Buri's Chai Badan district which will lead them to Saraburi's Chalerm Prakiat district and Ayutthaya's Tha Rua district.

If they come from the North, they would be better off using a road along the Chao Phraya river from Chai Nat's Manorom district to Ayutthaya.

Government and most private offices reopen on Wednesday. But banks and the stock market reopen for business tomorrow.

Road casualties have continued to climb. On Saturday alone, there were 67 deaths and 886 injuries, according to the Road Safety War Room.

The splashing of water, a highlight of the Songkran festival, ended yesterday, except in Chonburi, especially Pattaya, where the festival runs for another week.
Phra Nakhon district will today send 200 cleaners to tidy up Khao San road. But the amount of white powder covering Bangkok's streets this year is less than last year due to a state campaign against the use of powder during the festival.

Tourists injured in Thailand train accident
    Jul 17

BANGKOK (AP) -- A passenger train derailed on old tracks in the mountains of northern Thailand early Wednesday, slightly injuring at least 30 passengers, mostly foreign tourists. It was the second derailment on the popular route in a month.

The overnight train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai skidded off the tracks and seven out of 10 carriages flipped onto their sides, State Railway of Thailand governor Prapas Jongsanguan said. The accident occurred in Phrae province's Denchai district.

Railway authorities believed the accident was caused by old tracks that were scheduled for repair.

"From an initial investigation, the train was traveling under its limit, but the tracks at that stretch were old and in poor condition. The last carriage, therefore, skidded and brought down other cars," Prapas told The Associated Press on the phone.

Prapas said one passenger was seriously injured. The rest suffered minor injuries and were provided free transport to their destinations.

The Bangkok-Chiang Mai train is popular among foreign tourists. A Bangkok-bound train from Chiang Mai derailed early this month, but no one was injured.

Train service heading north on the route was expected to resume later Wednesday after the wreckage was cleared.

Tourists walk past the derailed train

    (AAP)

A New Zealander is among the injured after an overnight sleeper train derailed in northern Thailand.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade was unable to confirm the age or gender of the person, but the BangkokPost reports it was a 22-year-old woman.

She was among around 30 people hurt when the Bangkok to Chiang Mai express service came off the tracks.

MFAT says the tourist was treated in hospital for minor injuries then discharged.

It's thought those hurt were mostly foreign tourists, who received only minor injuries.

Three hundred passengers were onboard the overnight train, which derailed on old tracks in the mountains. It was the second derailment on the popular route in a month.

The train skidded off the tracks and seven out of 10 carriages flipped onto their sides, State Railway of Thailand governor Prapas Jongsanguan said.

Thailand train derailment injures 30; damaged tracks blamed

BANGKOK, July 17 (UPI) -- Damaged railroad tracks caused a derailment in Thailand Wednesday that injured 30 passengers, four seriously, the governor of the state railway said.

State Railway of Thailand governor Prapat Chongsanguen discounted human error in the accident, which occurred in Phrae province between the towns of Pak Pan and Kaeng Luang. Seven of the 10 cars of the Bangkok-Chang Mai overnight express train derailed, the Bangkok post reported.

The railway released the names of 23 of the injured passengers, and the newspaper noted only 5 were Thais, the rest from other countries. The newspaper added the train is popular with tourists visiting Chang Mai.

Chaing Mai bound train derails in tunnel

UTTARADIT : -- Six carriages of a Chiang Mai-bound express train derailed early yesterday in an over-100-year-old tunnel in Uttaradit's Muang district. No injuries were reported.

    http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/loca...ls-second-time

The train left Bangkok on Friday night with 415 passengers, many of whom were foreign tourists. It derailed at around 3am yesterday in the 382-metre-long Khao Pleung tunnel, located between Ban Pang Ton Phueng in Uttaradit and Huai Rai Station in Den Chai, Phrae.

The six carriages ended up leaning against the tunnel wall; however, its five leading carriages were undamaged and able to resume their journey to Den Chai. The affected passengers were transported by rail trolleys to Sila-at Station, where 15 buses took them to Chiang Mai and other destinations. The derailment caused Bangkok- and Chiang Mai-bound train services to be suspended for hours to allow for track repairs.

Northern derailment third in a month

Northern derailment third in a month

Published: 17 Aug 2013 at 12.41Online news: Local News
A Bangkok-Chiang Mai special express train derailed in Lampang on Friday evening, closing the State Railway of Thailand tracks until Saturday morning.

The incident in Hang Chat district was the third derailment on the northern line in the past month and the ninth for the SRT this year. No one was injured.
The incident in Lampang occurred around 7pm Friday when the left wheels of the 12-carriage train's sixth carriage went off the tracks, causing damages to more than 100 sleepers over a distance of 500 metres.

Around 300 passengers, 80% of them are foreigners, had to wait for three hours until the SRT could move everyone into the first five carriages to continue their journey north.

The SRT finally resumed normal service at 9.30am on Saturday.

The northern line was the scene of another derailment on Aug 2, when a northbound train went off the rails in a tunnel in Uttaradit.

Earlier, on July 13, the overnight express train derailed in Den Chai district of Phrae. The train was carrying 290 passengers, many of whom were foreign tourists. Thirty were injured, five of them seriously.

I have always enjoyed rail ravel, but I won't risk it in Thailand these days. Something that is worth noting is the reduction in staff and the problems caused by pension obligations.
The entire world is just beginning to feel the effects of the demographic time bomb that has been building up for decades. Either prices of services will escalate out of peoples' reach or former employees will not be receiving the pensions they were promised.

I took that train about 6 yrs ago and at about 3am it slipped the tracks in a station near lampang. No overturned cars and it was nearly stopped when it happened. I didn't even feel it but we had to get off and bus it the rest of the way. They had buses there immediately, so it must happen a lot.
