Than Shwe and Maung Aye Resign Military Posts
Friday, August 27, 2010
The two top men of the Burmese junta, Snr-Gen Than Shwe and his deputy, Vice Snr-Gen Maung Aye, have reportedly resigned from their military posts.
Than Shwe will remain head of state, however, with Maung Aye as his deputy, according to military sources on Friday.
Lt-Gen Thura Myint Aung is the new commander-in-chief of the Burmese armed forces, the sources said.
Gen Shwe Mann and Gen Tin Aung Myint Oo, the third and fourth military leaders, also reportedly retired from their military positions and will stand as candidates in Naypyidaw constituencies at the November election.
The changes at the top are part of a major reshuffle in the military's leadership at state and division command levels, the sources said.
