ELDERLY GERMAN COMMITS SUICIDE IN PATTAYA AFTER TOO MUCH STRESS
A severely stressed out German national managed, after at least two suicide attempts, to finally kill himself on 17 June 2009 in Na Jomtien. Doctors had previously expressed concern at his mental state and the fact that he appeared to be taking too much medication for gout.
The victim, Mr. Karl Klaus Hofmeister, [70], shot himself in the head at their home in Na Jomtien, Pol. Lt. Arnon Infong, Na Jomtien Police Investigator learnt when Mr. Karl’s Thai wife, Mrs. Daoroong Saowapun, [36, reported the incident to him at 00.30 am, on 17 June 2009. A police team and paramedics were duly sent to investigate.
Arriving at the incident location, police found the distraught widow and the victim’s body, lying naked in the bedroom of the house. He had a bullet wound in the back of his skull and a bullet cartridge case was found nearby, with a Smith and Wesson .38 mm. revolver lying near his feet. Police also found some gunpowder residue on his left hand and mouth.
Mrs. Daoroong was crying uncontrollably and actually fainted during the investigation; police sent her to the hospital. After recovering sufficiently, Mrs. Daoroong was able to tell police that her husband had been a victim of gout for about 20 years and had been on medication for a considerable time. His doctor had apparently recently told him that he had been taking too much chemical medication.

Mrs. Daoroong said, in addition, that her husband was also worried whether or not his son-in-law would come to visit him, which had made him even more stressed out. Mr. Hofmeister had apparently been visiting doctors at many hospitals, of late, one of whom had expressed the opinion that his patient was also suffering from a serious mental condition as well, according to Mrs. Daoroong.
She also told police that on 18 May, this year, her husband had previously attempted to commit suicide by taking 30 sleeping tablets, but a doctor had managed to save his life. Since then, he had kept telling her that he wanted to kill himself, which had necessitated her having to keep him under constant observation. On the night of the incident, while everybody was resting, she had been watching TV in the living room. Mr. Hofmeister had apparently finished his shower and had then gone to the bedroom and shut the door. Not too long after, she heard a gunshot, and rushing to the bedroom had found him dead on the bed.
The police intend to carry out further investigations but for now they presume that Mr. Hofmeister had sat on the edge of the bed and used his left hand to hold the gun and put it in his mouth before pulling the trigger.
Mr. Hofmeister’s body was sent to Bangkok for further examination and his embassy is being informed accordingly.
