Pattaya police have arrested a 66-year-old American man for attempting to exchange counterfeit U.S. dollar banknotes at a currency exchange booth in Jomtien Beach. The suspect, publicly identified by Pattaya police as Mr. Stookey, was apprehended on June 3rd, 2025, after staff at the “TT Currency Exchange” noticed the suspicious banknotes and alerted authorities.
According to police reports, Mr. Stookey presented ten $100 bills to be exchanged for Thai baht. Upon closer examination, staff discovered that the bills were fake, marked with the English phrase “For Motion Picture Use Only,” indicating that they were intended for film props rather than legitimate transactions. When confronted, the suspect allegedly insisted on completing the exchange and reacted angrily when denied.
Police later searched his belongings and found an additional 11 counterfeit $100 notes. He was charged with possession and attempted use of counterfeit U.S. currency, fully aware of its illegitimacy.
Authorities revealed that Mr. Stookey has been traveling to and from Thailand for the past decade, reportedly residing in the Pratumnak Hill area with his Thai wife from the country’s northeastern region. He is currently in police custody pending further legal proceedings. Mr. Stookey has not commented on the case to the media or made a statement regarding his point of view as of press time.
Thai law enforcement continues to crack down on financial crimes, reminding residents and businesses to stay alert against fraudulent activities that could hurt economic security.
