Phuket has intensified efforts to manage the province’s mounting waste problem, focusing on removing processed waste and minimizing environmental impact.

Mr. Chalermphon Piyanarongroj, the Permanent Secretary of Phuket City Municipality, told the Phuket Express that the waste management process, conducted by Thai Paiboon Equipment Co., Ltd. and SCG (Siam Cement Group), involves sorting and removing previously accumulated waste to create more landfill space. Phuket currently generates over 1,200 tons of waste daily, but its incinerators can handle only 700 tons per day, leaving an excess of 500 tons that must be stored in landfill areas.

Recognizing the potential disturbance caused by these waste removal activities, authorities have apologized for any inconvenience experienced by residents. In response to concerns about odor pollution, officials have temporarily halted additional waste processing for the next two days while expediting the removal of extracted waste from the site. To further mitigate odor issues, the uncovered waste piles will be sealed with plastic sheets, and EM (Effective Microorganism) solution will be sprayed two to three times daily to neutralize smells.

Additionally, recent heavy rainfall has exacerbated the odor problem, prompting officials to implement swift remedial measures. Chalermphon has urged all sectors, including households, communities, and businesses, to proactively reduce waste at its source. By minimizing unnecessary waste disposal, residents can contribute to solving Phuket’s long-term waste challenges.
