Five police officers have died after their plane crashed into the sea in Thailand.

The plane was conducting a test flight to prepare for parachute training in Hua Hin district before it crashed just after 8am on Friday, said Archayon Kraithong, the Royal Thai Police spokesman.

One officer is in critical condition.

The five officers are thought to have died instantly at the scene. One is in hospital in critical condition

The plane, which appeared in footage to be a Viking DHC-6 Twin Otter, crashed near Hua Hin Airport.

According to authorities, the air traffic control tower cleared the aircraft for take-off at 8.07am on a weather reconnaissance flight.

One minute after take-off the aircraft lost contact and crashed into the sea, the Thai enquirer reported.

Prasoot Hombunterng, the Hua Hin district chief, said initial reports suggested the aircraft experienced a loud engine noise resembling an explosion shortly after take-off. The crew attempted to return to the airfield but were unsuccessful.

The photos show the plane in the sea about 100 meters (330ft) off shore. The body of the plane appeared to be broken in two.

The plane crashed into the sea just a minute after take-off

There were six people on board, all police officers. Mr Kraithong initially said five people died at the scene and one died at the hospital, but later revised the death toll to five, confirming the officer who was sent to the hospital remained in critical condition but alive.

The cause of the crash was not immediately known. Mr Kraithong said officials are gathering evidence including data from the plane’s black box.

According to information from the Police Aviation Division, the DHC6-400 Twin Otter from Canada was the 36th aircraft of the Royal Thai Police. Three of these aircraft entered service in 2020 and were stationed at the Police Aviation Division at Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok.

Prior to the accident, the aircraft had experienced problems with the wing strut and control stick malfunction. It underwent systematic repairs and was on a test flight when the incident occurred.

This type of aircraft is a tactical transport plane that can be modified for various missions, including airborne supply drops, personnel transport, medical evacuation, equipment transport, and search and rescue operations. It can carry a maximum of 19 passengers and can be modified to install four medical beds with seats for doctors and nurses.

I've got some time in the Twin Otter and they are a forgiving bird with that large vertical stab and 10:1 aspect ratio wing. They are in a developed spin and recovery is possible if they had enough altitude and applied the appropriate spin recovery inputs. Of all the twin engine aircraft out there, engine out events are tame by most standards. Sad to see the loss of life on one of the safest planes out there.

Pilot of ill-fated police flight dies in hospital

Pol Lt Col Chaturong Wattanapraisarn, the pilot of the doomed aircraft which crashed into the sea off Cha Am this morning, has succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

He became the final victim of the deadly accident, in which a de Havilland DHC-6-400 Twin Otter plane plunged into the sea off Prachuap Khiri Khan province.

Five other passengers died at the scene, but Chaturong was rushed to a local ICU. He was pronounced dead this afternoon.

The five other fatalities were Pol Col Pratharn Khieukham, Pol Lt Col Panthep Maneewatcharangkoon (co-pilot), Pol Lt Thanawat Mekprasertsuk, and two mechanics, Pol Sgt Maj Prawat Pholhongsa and Lance Corporal Jirawat Marksakha.

Police Commissioner-General Pol Gen Kitrat Phanphet visited the crash site and was seen saluting the victims, whose bodies were draped with the Thai national flag. He also visited Chaturong at the hospital.

A police spokesman said earlier that the aircraft was on a trial flight, in preparation for a parachute exercise in Hua Hin.
The wreckage was found lying in shallow water, not far from Cha-am beach.

Kitrat stated that the investigation into the cause of the accident is expected to take about a month.

None of which is going to be of much use if there is a serious

    control stick malfunction
