Following a major earthquake in Myanmar on March 28, which caused tremors across parts of Thailand, many residents have turned their attention back to earthquake preparedness. A key resource gaining recognition is Earthquake TMD, a free mobile application developed by Thailand’s Earthquake Observation Division. Designed to deliver real-time alerts and safety information, the app is being recommended as a practical tool for navigating seismic and tsunami-related emergencies.
Earthquake TMD is available on both iOS and Android devices. It provides instant notifications about earthquakes in Thailand and globally, gathering data from domestic sources and international monitoring agencies such as the United States Geological Survey, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center, and Germany’s GEOFON. Users receive detailed information, including the location, magnitude, depth, time of the earthquake, and its distance from their current position.
The app includes several key features to assist during emergencies. The “Report Tremor Experience” function allows users to submit firsthand accounts of tremors they feel, contributing to the division’s tracking and situational awareness. The “Emergency Contacts” section provides offline access to essential phone numbers, including those for the National Disaster Warning Center and the National Institute for Emergency Medicine, ensuring that users can still reach help during network outages.
Another important feature is the “Guidelines” section, which offers step-by-step safety instructions for dealing with earthquakes and tsunamis. This section, similar to the emergency contacts list, can be accessed without an internet connection. The app also includes backup emergency numbers, allowing for continued access to support even if main communication lines are unavailable. Users can customize alert settings based on proximity or earthquake magnitude, receiving notifications for local incidents or stronger global events.
