Multiple people killed, many injured in bridge collapse on Rama 2 Road

Five people were killed and 24 injured when a bridge under construction on Rama 2 Road in Chom Thong district collapsed.

Fire and rescue workers evacuated dozens of people from the accident site, with some stranded on cranes.

The JS100 traffic radio Facebook page reported that a concrete beam, which was part of the new construction about 200m from an expressway entrance, collapsed onto an existing expressway structure. A number of workers were on site.

All traffic, including on the Dao Khanong expressway, has been shut down to facilitate rescue efforts.

Transport Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit ordered the contractor responsible for the Rama 2 elevated expressway to pay at least one million baht in compensation to each of the families of those who died.

The Expressway and Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (ETA) will help all those injured.

Suriya, who visited the site of the fatal accident today, also offered his condolences to the families of the dead.

Three Thais, including one engineer, plus two migrant site workers were killed when a cross beam collapsed on them. 24 other workers were also injured, some seriously.

The contracting company’s work was suspended for 14 days, pending an investigation into the cause of the collapse.

ETA Governor Surachet Laopoonsuk said that workers, with the help of heavy machinery, have been trying to clear debris from the road surface, so that the in-bound Dao Khanong expressway can be reopened to traffic, hopefully within seven days.

As for the out-bound expressway, he said that it might take about a month to reopen to traffic.

The accident affects both in-bound and out-bound traffic at the Dao Khanong toll plaza, making it impossible to use the Rama 2 Road. Motorists are advised to use Suksawat and Kanchanapisek roads instead.

Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. Amorn Pimanmas, president of the Thailand Structural Engineers Association, said today that, from his assessment of images, the collapse of the cross beam might have been caused by it not being strong enough or the structure that supported the beam not being able to support the load.

He suggested that a technical committee should be set up to inspect the materials used in the construction.

My wife's sister lives out near Rama II road. Whenever we drive out there I spend a lot of time looking nervously up at the haphazard construction going on overhead!

Another person injured in the Rama 2 bridge collapse dies in hospital

One of the workers seriously injured in the collapse of the cross beam of an elevated expressway, under construction on the Rama 2 Road, has died, bringing to death toll to six, according to the Por Teck Toeng Foundation.

An official at the foundation said that the injured man, a Burmese migrant worker, was pronounced dead at the Taksin Hospital, where he had been since Saturday morning when the accident took place.

The official said that relatives of the deceased went to the construction site to look for him today and were shown his smartphone and bag, which were found at the site. His co-workers told them that he was last seen working on one of the cross beams.

The relatives then went to Taksin Hospital to claim his remains.

Emergency teams have also suspended the search for two missing workers today, after it was reported that both are safe.

In the meantime, workers have been busily trying to remove piles of fallen beams, steel and other debris from the Rama 2 Road surface. The work cannot be done quickly, though, because the beams and steel must be cut into smaller pieces for removal. Mobile cranes, backhoes and other heavy machinery have been deployed to the site.

According to the Expressway and Rapid Transit Authority, about 80% of the main truss, 30% of the H-beams and 50% of the tower support have been removed from the road surface so far.

The authority expects the Chalerm Maha Nakhon expressway, at the in-bound Dao Khanong toll plaza, to reopen to traffic in seven days. The out-bound toll plaza will not reopen for 30 days.

Investigation Continues On Cause of Deadly Construction Site Collapse in Bangkok

Our most recent update on the construction site collapse in Bangkok comes from March 17, 2025. Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra called for legal action following the collapse of a concrete beam on an under-construction elevated roadway along Rama II Road, a key highway linking Bangkok to southern Thailand.

The incident occurred early on Saturday, March 15, 2025, killing six people and injuring 24 others. The Prime Minister emphasized the need to investigate whether safety protocols were followed, stating, “We will see if any processes have been ignored, and whether the construction work followed the rules and regulations. There may be criminal responsibility.”

The collapse is part of a broader pattern of deadly incidents on this highway project, with previous accidents amongst others reported in November 2023, May 2023, and January 2024, highlighting ongoing safety concerns in Thailand’s construction sector due to lax enforcement of regulations.

As a follow-up, Transport Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit stated on March 17 that initial findings ruled out substandard materials as the cause, urging the public to await the results of a full investigation.

The Expressway Authority of Thailand estimates clearing the debris and restoring access to the affected Dao Khanong Expressway will take about a week. Contractors involved have been suspended for 14 days pending the investigation, which continues to explore the precise cause—early reports suggest unexpected soil shifts may have destabilized temporary supports, leading to the collapse under the weight of over 10 tons of concrete.

Authorities have promised maximum punishment for those found responsible, amid growing public frustration over repeated fatalities on this prolonged infrastructure project.
