Does that mean that 50% of the ranking is based on research? Something many hopeful students do not realise when they are selecting a university to attend and rely on these ranking as a measuring tool. Research doesn’t mean anything for an under grad degree.

Essentially, most British universities do not accept Thai secondary education qualifications for entry into a graduate programme but demand enrolment in a foundation year which thy must pass.
Thai degree holders are two-a-penny and are found gaining employment pretty much everywhere as 7-11 dross, driving trucks, picking their zits in department stores and waiting tables.

The Thai Chinese hiso cadre are of course a different breed paying for their children to be educated in international schools working to foreign syllabi.

My experience teaching at Chula was a positive one: the vast majority of students were eager learners, though still handicapped intellectually by years of local education. My faculty colleagues were a mixed bag of foreign-educated Thais and farangs...and only one tefler (with a suspect online degree from Kenya). Some were (distantly) related to royalty, others to influential politicians and still others, young and back from overseas with newly minted PhDs, working hard to climb the academic ladder. There existed the usual cliques, backbiters and slackers I encountered on other faculties, but on the whole, a staff whose company I enjoyed...
