Price of electricity from January-April to rise

The Energy Regulatory Commission of Thailand has set new electricity charges, ranging from 4.68 baht to 5.95 baht/unit from January until April, 2024.

The price from September until December this year has been 3.99 baht/unit.

At its meeting today, the commission approved an 89.55 satang/unit Fuel Tariff (FT) for the January-April period, which will raise the price of electricity to an average of 69.07 satang/unit. When adding in the power base rate of 3.78 baht/unit, the new price of electricity will average 4.68 baht/unit, excluding VAT.

The commission said that it took into consideration the impacts of the new pricing on consumers, but also took into account the financial security of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand, the main electricity producer in Thailand.

It also said that the adjustment is in line with increased fuel costs, which EGAT will have to partially absorb while being able to settle its debts and maintain a cash flow sufficient to continue its operations.

The commission said that it did enable members of the public to express their opinions, regarding the price increase of power, from November 10th to 24th before it made the decision today.

Amazing how it's at its cheapest when you don't use as much.

Energy Commission lambasted over electricity price increase

The Federation of Thai Industries has roundly criticized the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) for behaving like an only agency responsible for setting national electricity prices every four months, based on the data and assumptions provided by oil companies, without any plan for structural reform to reduce power prices.

The comment was made by FTI vice president Isares Rattanadilok Na Phuket today, in response to the ERC’s decision yesterday to increase the price of electricity, for the January-April 2024 period, from 3.99 baht to 4.68 baht per unit, or 17%.

He said that the ERC’s decision clearly reflects on the commission’s energy policy and management, which lack any vision or strategy to control electricity prices, through price restructuring, as has been recommended by other sectors.

Isares said that the ERC has the most resources to address energy price problems and should take the lead in developing and recommending relevant and targeted policies. Instead, however, it seems to behave like an ordinary unit, doing the routine job of recalculating electricity prices every four months based on data provided or recorded internally.

He also said that consumers should not be left expecting bad news about prices from the ERC every four months, only to then have the government step in to mitigate the price increase.

The global price of LNG going up is the driver. Not much the ERC can do about that other than to find cheaper sources as they have plans to do by increasing Thai LNG production.

The Federation of Thai Industries is off base blaming the ERC and should be working on ways to reduce their need for EGAT supplied power.

Fire is included in my mo rent fee. So, when it's hot I leave the freezer door open.

New electricity price will be less than Bt4.68 per unit : Energy minister

Energy Minister Pirapan Salirathavibhaga says that the Bt4.68/unit electricity price for January-April next year, as proposed by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), is a huge increase from the current rate of Bt3.99/unit and unacceptable.

He assured that the actual price will be much lower, adding that he has instructed the authorities concerned to explore all means to ease the burden on consumers.

The ERC must manage the pricing in a way that reduces the price or, if an increase is inevitable, must keep it at a level that will not place an unnecessarily heavy burden on consumers, said the energy minister.

He explained that the ERC is legally required to publically announce the new power price, so that they can take feedback before the new price comes into effect.

The energy minister also said that they have been working non-stop to gather and analyse all relevant information on fuel, gas, electricity, clean energy and alternative energy, in order to design structural change to a sustainable and fair energy system.

Hitting back at critics, he said that it is easy to talk about energy reform, but deciding how it is to be reformed, what the alternatives are and identifying the impacts of reform are not easy tasks.

He said he and his staff are working hard to come up with solutions that will be of public benefit.

No one likes it when charges increase, its bound to spark some resistance in those without solar to insulate themselves from the rise.

Ouch. The recommended percentage increase is fairly hefty.

Which is why a lot of countries sign long term supply deals when prices are good.

But that would involve Thailand being proactive as opposed to reactive.

This thread prompted me to look at my electricity bill. It has a lot of information printed there, including the number of units used and the total price, before VAT. So I can use my trusty calculator to work out the unit price if I want to.
However, the actual unit price is not shown there, so far as I can see. Which means we'll not see the change. Cunning monopolists.
And what, exactly, are the two charges (total about B60) at the top of the invoice, before you use any electricity?
