Tourist Fee to be Imposed in June

BANGKOK (NNT) - Tourism and Sports Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn has announced plans to begin collecting a 300-baht fee from foreign tourists arriving in the country starting in June.

According to Phiphat, the funds raised from this fee will be used to support visitors involved in accidents and to develop tourist destinations in the country.

Minister Phiphat noted, however, that the fee will not be collected from foreigners with work permits and border passes.

Thailand expects to see approximately 25 million tourist arrivals this year, a significant increase from the 11.8 million arrivals in 2022. In 2019, the country welcomed a record 40 million arrivals, with over 11 million of them being Chinese.

Tourism is a major contributor to the economy of Thailand, Southeast Asia’s second-largest economy, contributing about 12% of its gross domestic product before the pandemic. Tourism spending is forecast to reach at least 2.38 trillion baht this year.

The proposal for a tourist fee was first considered in 2020 and is still subject to cabinet approval.

Do you also think that this extra 300 baht they're imposing on tourists before they endure the disdainful attitude of the locals for their 2 week holiday in the Land of Sneers will be used "to support visitors involved in accidents and to develop tourist destinations in the country"?

I could not care less what they use it for, and anyone who cares enough to let it affect their vacation plans better stay home IMO.

So, the tourist tax has been delayed again. It was meant to be last year, then April 2023 and now June.

Will it really provide B500,000 insurance cover?

It’s the principle, these bloodsuckers target us with their dual pricing shit and we already pay a tourist tax which formerly was extracted as a departure tax that was then incorporated into ticket pricing by the carriers who in turn paid the government.

This is simply another tax on top of the tax that we already pay in addition to the purchase tax in addition to the service charge.

will this fee be filched from only those on tourist visas, or will visitors and retirees on non immigrant visas, some of whom are already required to purchase thai health insurance, also be shafted?

They made the airlines responsible for checking covid insurance before boarding flights, surely if the handful of uninsured idiots are such a burden when hospitalised they could just continue insisting the airlines vet insurance, but of course its another Thai scam to extract more cash from tourist - just wish they'd be honest.....oh

As has been pointed out, it's the effect on the many who travel in and out frequently from the surrounding countries, whether for business or pleasure, who will undoubtedly reduce their trips as a result of this.

Its main purpose, of course, is to refresh the car and watch inventories.

    Wow!
    A whole B300.
    This will surely break some.
....and greatly discourage too many from bothering.

Some other trivial aspect of life to be angst and whinging on about.

I don't suppose they gave any thought to scaling it according to journey time, as others do.

That would lessen the impact on regional tourism.

Even the chinkies would love that, eh Jeff?

Agree us long stay folks are not tourists hence a tourist fee should only be charged for folks entring on a tourist visa.

Well....you know how that is, Norts. It's all about gathering revenue in any form they dream up.
These types of programs usually have little to do with ethics, fairness or reasoned logic.

You'll recall the Covid era where we saw similar practices across the board.

Well I know many of you will be shocked by the news, but it's now been pushed back until at least September.

Operators seek clarity on B300 tourism fee

Wow. Snaggers and his sidekick are horrified that the ghastly natives will extract the massive amount of 300 baht . It seems they want to live in thailand but cant afford it now the 300 baht increase.sad way to retire.

I'm with BB. Its noise for christ sake. The crap some debate about is utterly amazing. They should have just done it like most places do rather than announce it and no one would even know to care. @ Hal, its not about "White Buffalos", it impacts all tourists. its not a whitey thing.

    ”We”???

As if the Thai could give a flying fuck about you are any farang living here.

The tourist levy is simply a tax that will no doubt find its way into the unaccountable black hole that is the money pit for the usual suspects.

That it is billed as a fund for impecunious uninsured visitors incurring health costs is as laughable as any of their many other silly claims only credible to the gormless and stupid.
