Former city police chief Kamronwit Thoopkrachang could face charges of possessing a firearm, carrying a gun and violating the airport act, according to police.
The ex-police chief was arrested and detained in Japan on June 22 after a gun and ammunition were found in his luggage at Narita airport in Tokyo. Japanese prosecutors decided not to indict Pol Lt Gen Kamronwit.
Local police started a probe of their own on his return to Thailand. It is now 85% complete, said Pol Lt Gen Amnuay Nimmano, chief of Provincial Police Region 1.
The investigation could be wrapped up within a week after police obtain information from Japan, he said.
