Tom Armstrong: Mother of man missing in Thailand sets up fund
Tom's mother said she may follow his father and fly out to Thailand
The mother of a Suffolk man, who went missing in Thailand, has set up a fund to help with the search.
Tom Armstrong, 22, from Kelsale near Saxmundham, was due to arrive at Heathrow Airport on 9 January, but he did not board his flight and he has not been in contact since.
Helen Armstrong-Bland, his mother, is hoping any money raised could be used for flights for the family to Thailand.
Kingsley Armstrong, his father, is due to fly to Bangkok at the weekend.
Mr Armstrong had been living on the island of Koh Tao where he had been taking a diving course.
The family said Tom did not have a mobile phone and the last email they received from him was on 6 January telling them about his flight plans.
'Unknown quantity'
Money was withdrawn from Tom's bank account on 16 January at a machine in Bangkok, Suffolk Police said.
Mrs Armstrong-Bland said: "I have good and bad days, but I'm keeping busy trying to make contacts in Thailand and helping the police.
"In December we received an email from him to say that he'd ran into trouble in Bangkok, but he didn't elaborate on that.
"We're setting up a fund because Tom's dad is going out, I might follow and there might be other costs in the future as it's all a bit of an unknown quantity."
The family said any money left in the fund would be given to the Missing Abroad charity.
The family said Thai police believed the cash machine where money was withdrawn was covered by a CCTV camera.
Kingsley Armstrong said: "We believe Tom is still in Bangkok.
"We've got a bit of information about at least two withdrawals in the city centre."
A Suffolk Police spokesman said: "We continue to work through Interpol and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office with the Thai authorities to help with the investigation into the disappearance of Tom Armstrong."
"Slavery is the daughter of darkness; an ignorant people is the blind instrument of its own destruction; ambition and intrigue take advantage of the credulity and inexperience of men who have no political, economic or civil knowledge. They mistake pure illusion for reality, license for freedom, treason for patriotism, vengeance for justice."-Simón Bolívar

Tom Armstrong search: Thailand trip for missing man's father
Tom Armstrong had been diving in Thailand
The father of a Suffolk man who has been missing in Thailand for nearly a month is flying out to the country on Sunday to try to find him.
Tom Armstrong, 22, from Kelsale near Saxmundham, had been due to arrive at Heathrow from Bangkok airport on 9 January but did not catch the flight.
Father Kingsley Armstrong said: "I've had a lot of help from parents who've been through a similar sort of thing.
"We're fairly certain now that he's in a specific area within Bangkok."
Tom Armstrong has been in Thailand since last April and had been living on the island of Koh Tao for a diving course.
He was last in contact with his family via email on 6 January, when he told them of his flight plans home.
Since his disappearance, money has been withdrawn from his bank account in Bangkok.
'Tom, get in contact'
"We're not sure whether he's hurt, injured or unable to come forward," said his father.
Via a Facebook page devoted to the search for his son, Mr Armstrong said parents in a similar situation had "given me a lot of helpful contacts and explained how they went through the process of finding their children who'd been lost in Bangkok".
Mr Armstrong has scheduled meetings with the Thai authorities and will be distributing posters of his son around the city.
He said: "If you're there Tom, get in contact with me."
Helen Armstrong-Bland, Tom's mother, has set up a fund to help with the search, hoping any money raised could be used for flights for the family to Thailand.
She said: "Tom's dad is going out, I might follow and there might be other costs in the future as it's all a bit of an unknown quantity."
Suffolk Police are working through Interpol and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office with the Thai authorities to help with the investigation.
Mr Armstrong is prepared to stay in Thailand until his son is found.
What I found strange about this case is he sent his mum an email stating he was in a bit of trouble. Doesnt sound like someone in trouble with the police or a case of him being abducted. WHy was he not prepared to let his mum know what the trouble was, does not look like shortage of cash either.
^Same thing caught my eye. When I was that age, my mother would have said, "What kind of trouble are you in?" Etc, etc.
It is weird, they've set up a facebook account for him, they've not mentioned if he had his own account and if it has been accessed or not, I would think almost every kid that age has one.
So, the son is MIA in Thailand. Then Dad came over to look for him, and now he has gone missing too?
^Huh? Where'd that come from Mr. Moog?
No mention of how large the sums of money withdrawn were ? After this length of time it still is very strange that he would chose to go incommunicado to me.
Sad, but doubt that they will find him alive.
I reckon he has got himself hooked on crystal meth or yaba.
His Mother must be fearful that her son has been pulled into some paedo pimping ring. In which case I can't see how they trace and extricate him.
As large as Bangkok is; completely vanishing is very far fetched, unless you've been offed, or really are determined not to be traced. I wouldn't want to be in young Toms shoes if it is a case of going awol. It smacks of something more than that sadly.
What I find distinctly odd about this case is the conduct of his parents who allegedly have started a "fund" in order to finance a search for the lad.
Why would anyone do that? It costs £500 to fly from the UK to BKK and £30 a night to stay in any number of reasonable hotels. Are his parents so potless that they can't rustle up a couple of grand to look for their only son who has apparently disappeared in dubious circumstances. I mean, what sort of people are they who in increasing desperation and worry suddenly think " Well, Ok John, you go ahead and book a flight for yourself while I stay at home and organise a fund to pay for what might be a long, long expedition and we don't want to be out of pocket do we so I'll just hang around and see how much comes rolling etc, eh"?
It simply isn't real, is it?
maybe they are paying some private detective
^ And look for him...how exactly when you are apparently skint?
Stand on a street corner with a sign?
Oddness.
