'Sleeping beauty' model prompt crackdown on beauty clinics

The severe illness of a model who suffers from "sleeping beauty syndrome" after she had a collagen injection to smooth out her hips, prompted public health authorities yesterday to order a crackdown on illegal beauty clinics.

Public Health Minister Witthaya Buranasiri said he has instructed the Health Service Support Department (HSSD) to inspect and strictly control beauty and aesthetic clinics nationwide.

Clinic operators who are found to be giving beauty injections without medical licenses will serve jail sentences, he added.

The crackdown comes after the Public Health Ministry learned of a 33-year-old female promotional model who became severely ill after she received a collagen injection at a condominium in Bangkok's Lat Phrao area from a man who claimed he was a doctor.

She developed a severe complication five minutes after receiving an injection of collagen solution to smooth out wrinkles in her hip. Her heart stopped beating and her brain was damaged due to lack of oxygen. She is now undergoing medical treatment at a private hospital for what's been diagnosed as "sleeping beauty syndrome", or Kleine-Levin syndrome, a neurological disorder characterised by excessive sleep.

"Legal experts and health officials are now investigating the cause of the severe illness of a promotional model," said Dr Tares Krassanairawiwong, the HSSD's deputy director general.

Injecting collagen or other substances into your body in an effort to keep looking young might cause adverse side effects and even death, Dr Tares added. Side effects include inflamed skin, blood clots, low blood pressure, organ failure, shock, paralysis and blindness.

Dr Atthaphan Pornmontarath, president of the Thai Association and Academy of Cosmetic Surgery and Medicine, said most cases in which complications have developed from collagen injections were because the solution was made from animal protein or because too much was used.

Patients seeking aesthetic treatments should ask the clinic's doctor to show his or her medical license. They should also ask to see the label of the collagen solution, which must be approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

Dr Amnart Kusalanant, president of the Medical Council of Thailand, said the council is checking the records of the man who claimed that he was a physician and injected the model.

"If we find that he was a fake doctor, he will face two years in jail as punishment," Dr Amnart said. "It's a violation of the Medical Professional Act."

The Medical Council also called on the public for help in identifying the man.

Quack's cosmetic 'care' leaves woman in coma | Bangkok Post: news

Quack's cosmetic 'care' leaves woman in coma

Athitaya Eiamyai, 33, went to an unlicensed cosmetic surgeon for collagen injections to increase the size of her hips and make her figure more shapely. Instead, she ended up in hospital, close to death and under the care of real doctors.

A man known as Dr Pop injected the collagen into her hipline area at a condominium unit in Lat Phrao area on Sunday.

In just a few minutes, Ms Athitaya lost consciousness and the quack "doctor" could not wake her up.

She was sent Lat Phrao Hospital where real doctors said her heart had stopped beating and her brain was deprived of oxygen for about four minutes.

Ms Athitaya, who normally works as a freelance emcee and goods introducer, was later transferred to Kluaynamthai Hospital, where she remains in the intensive care unit. The prognosis for her recovery is not good and doctors say she may become a "sleeping beauty".

A report in the Daily News newspaper said Ms Athitaya chose to get hip augmentation collagen injections from Dr Pop because he charged only 40,000 baht, compared to around 70,000 baht charged by a licensed cosmetic surgery clinic.

Her mother, Rabieb Pinklub, said Ms Athitaya can open her eyes, but cannot move. A doctor had told the family to prepare for the worst and that she may die.

Ms Rabieb warned people thinking of enhancing their beauty through the injection of some foreign substance into their body to be sure to get the service from legal hospitals or clinics. Otherwise they could end up like her daughter.

Pol Col Wiwat Kamchamnan of the Children and Women Protection Sub-Division said the police already known the real name and address of the unlicensed Dr Pop and will investigate the case.

I wouldn't concern myself too greatly about that many supposed victims...

I suspect a few select could afford the B40,000 - B70,000 per treatment.

Because possibly they would be concerned that too do so would leave them open to legal action due to slander, been as the law in Thailand in this regard generally favours those who have the financial clout.

Possibly because he was unprepared for a situation where someone had such a serious allergic reaction to the Collagen filler material. I understand that the correct proceedure would have been to consult with the patient to check for history of any allergic reactions, and then inject a small quantity of this substance, some time before hand to check for any allergic reactions. However this is an example of someone wanting a job done on the cheap, with a tragic outcome as a result.

Quack cosmetic doctor charged | Bangkok Post: news

    Quack cosmetic doctor charged
Unlicensed cosmetic doctor Thanat Natveerakul, 24, who is known as Dr Pop, has confessed to police that he injected a filler material into 33-year-old Athitiya Eiamyai's buttocks that caused her to collapse into a deep coma.

Mr Thanat, 24, turned himself in to police at the Children and Women Protection Sub-Division last night.

He admitted he was not licensed to perform the procedure but said he used to work as an assistant at a skin clinic and was tasked with giving injections. After gaining experience, he resigned and started administering to his own clients, who came to him by word-of-mouth.

Thanat Natveerakul (Photo by Chanat Katanyu)

He said he had performed the injection procedure on more than 20 women, many of whom, including Ms Athitiya, worked as product presenters.

His normal service covered the injection of glutathione for whitening purposes and an injection to increase the buttock size at a price of 500 to 1,000 baht. But he charged Ms Athitiya 40,000 baht because he used an imported filler material - which was earlier reported to be collagen.

Mr Thanat said he was sorry about causing Ms Athitiya's collapse and would pay for her medical treatment. He also apologised to Ms Athitiya’s parents, who said they cannot put all the blame on Mr Thanat because their daughter chose voluntarily to use his services.

Ms Athitiya was injected with a foreign substance at a condominium in Lat Phrao on Sunday and became unconscious with a few minutes. Doctors said later her heart stopped working and her brain was starved of oxygen for at least four minutes.

However, Metropolitan Police Bureau chief Kamronwit Thoopkrachang and a representative of Public Health Ministry said police would definitely press charges.

Mr Thanat is initially charged with offering a medical service without holding a license, which has a maximum penalty of three years jail and a 30,000 baht fine, and also with illegally operating an unregistered clinic, which carries a maximum penalty of three years jail and a 60,000 baht fine.

Ms Athitiya remains in a coma in the intensive care unit at Kluaynamthai Hospital. Doctors have advised the family she is unlikely to recover.

The video clip below, uploaded to Youtube by hui huizuke, shows Mr Thanat taking Ms Athitiya, who went into a coma after he injected her with a buttocks reshaper, to Lat Phrao Hospital's emergency ward on Sept 16, 2012.

^^From this photo set, you can tell alot from the atire of the suspect, if he was a doctor of any repute he would have made the effort to have worn a decent suit (as per his solicitor), and would also have got rid of that bracelet.
Looks like in some one of the photos, he was preparing to stick her in the arse

Question, why do the suspects agree to re-enactment of the alledged crime?

would be interestng to see his face in a close-up, as he must be naturally his own best advertisement... certainly he has done himself some injections...

but an arse full of collagen is definitely expensive, one would guess...
and it doesnt even last for long...?

dont they usually use the own body fat, pulled from the belly or so?
for sure he could be a donor...

Woman dies from cosmetic injection | Bangkok Post: breakingnews

    Woman dies from cosmetic injection

BANGKOK - A woman who fell unconscious a few minutes after an unlicensed cosmetic clinician injected a filler material into her buttocks died on Tuesday morning, reports said.

Athitiya Eiamyai, 33, a product presenter, was declared dead at 10.35am in the intensive care unit at Kluaynamthai Hospital.

On Sept 16, Thanat Natveerakul, who is known as Dr Pop, injected a foreign filler substance into Athitiya's buttocks at a condominium in Lat Phrao as part of a procedure to make her figure more shapely. Within minutes she lost consciousness and then fell into a deep coma. Doctors said later her heart stopped beating and her brain was starved of oxygen for at least four minutes.

Dr Pop, 24, later turned himself in to police and confessed that he is not licensed to perform the procedure. He said he used to work as an assistant at a skin clinic and had experience giving injections. He resigned from the clinic to start his own business and clients came to him by word of mouth.

Quack cosmetician to face manslaughter charge | Bangkok Post: news

Quack cosmetician to face manslaughter charge

An unlicensed cosmetologist who injected a foreign substance into the body of a woman who died on Tuesday will be charged with negligent manslaughter, deputy Bangkok police chief Pol Maj Gen Anuchai Lekbamrung said on Tuesday.

Athitiya Eiamyai, 33, was declared dead about 10.40am.

Athitiya, who was a product presenter, fell into a coma after receiving an injection from Thanat Natveerakul, 24, who practised illegally as a cosmetic clinician under the name “Dr Pop” despite having no medical licence.

She became unconscious a few minutes after she was injected with a filler material into her buttocks, as part of a procedure to make her figure more shapely.

Doctors said later her heart stopped beating and her brain was starved of oxygen for at least four minutes. She fell into a deep coma and had been hospitalised since 16 Sept.

Dr Pop later turned himself in to police and confessed that he was not licensed to perform the procedure. He said he used to work as an assistant at a skin clinic and had experience giving injections. He resigned from the clinic to start his own business and clients came to him by word of mouth.

    He was released on bail.

Pol Maj Gen Anuchai said he will face an additional charge of negligent manslaughter which carries a maximum penalty of ten years in jail and/or a 20,000 baht fine.

Mr Thanat has already been charged with offering a medical service without holding a licence, which has a maximum penalty of three years jail and a 30,000 baht fine, and also with illegally operating an unregistered clinic, which carries a maximum penalty of three years jail and a 60,000 baht fine.

Doctors have warned this case should serve as a lesson for those using the services of “moh krapao”, or backroom beauticians, who offer cosmetic treatment to clients at prices far below those of the legitimate clincis.

They suggested that people research any cosmetic procedure they plan to have and choose only licensed and reliable clinics or hospitals, instead of risking their lives with unlicensed quacks.

Athitiya parent’s told reporters that they were disappointed that "Dr Pop" had visited their daughter only twice since she was hospitalised, proving that he was not concerned about his patient.

They said he offered 40,000 baht to them to help with hospital bills, but they declined.
