The embassy cannot act independently (it is utterly without initiative and the quality of Ambassador these days ensures it remains so) and London is riven with subservient civil servants who would rather die than set a precedent. Popular support led by some emerging MP with a following might prompt Cameroon/Hague into action but in truth it is likely repatriation will only be effected through charity and the philanthropic help from some decent minded wealthy individual.

The staff I know at that school only have good things to say about him.

The guy was well liked. Friendship is not to be taken lightly. From around the world as well. I for one wish him the very best of luck. Hopefully in the end his insurance will see all the world publicity and for once open the vaults of cash just a bit more.
