The truth about 'high level' language tests for migrants - which include words like 'shop', 'big house' and 'very rich' | the Daily Mail=But the Government's big idea is not quite what it first appeared.
Papers released alongside the announcement said the required English skills would be similar to "A1 of the Council of Europe scale".
The Daily Mail has tracked down the Council's A1 document and its requirements are basic, to say the least.
A1 is neither tip-top, or the highest standard - it is the lowest, and by far.
The new arrivals will be expected to show nothing more than "a very basic range of simple expressions about personal details and needs of a concrete type".
They might be expected to explain where they live and show they know enough language for basic survival. This would include such rudimentary phrases as "where are the shops?", "how much is that?" and "my name is..."
Agreed. Some of the questions do not have the right answer. Others are badly worded and look like they have been written by a comitee. I failed miserably but I still maintain that civil servants are over paid and can look forward to a very high pension, at the expense of everyone else.Originally Posted by NickA

The English is dreadful in a number of cases (so obviously fluency in English is not a requirement). I actually would like to debate a couple of answers, because I'm sure they're wrong. Several answers (like the women working & civil service ones) are debatable. I'm sure native Brits might give different answers than those given as the correct answer.
So, basically, if you can sit over their textbook for 3 months & repeat everything rote fashion, you're fine. If you can actually think for yourself, you're buggered.
Bought the book for mrs Ast a couple years ago. Looked through it and thought it was full of useless information that would have very little benefit for my wife. We both decided it would be better for her to back to school and do a combined ESOL and citizenship course. Ok weve have had to do two FLR visas instead of the one before getting ILR, but the benefits of going back to school and learning English have been enormous. Scrap the bloody test, unless English is your first language, and make everyone do an ESOL course. It will certainly benefit the country a lot more.
Can you believe even Canadians, Americans, Ausies, and Kiwis have to take the test. I mean jesus have you heard anything so damn ridiculous.
I aint superstitious, but I know when somethings wrong
I`ve been dragging my heels with a bitch called hope
Let the undercurrent drag me along.
Visa Consultants are merely blood-sucking parasites. Charging enormous fees for something very straight forward based on ignorance.
British Emabassy warns against using any third party for Visas or Marriage. Sign posted outside the entrance in Bangkok. Embassy has very clear outlines and help for Visa applications.
