    Teachers making over 100k?

**Is this guy serious? These people have so much to learn. **

I have this friend who is not a teacher, but he told me that all the teachers he knows in Thailand (only 5-6) make over 100k a month. I told him this is an exception, but he seriously thinks the average teaching wage in Thailand is much higher than it is.

    I have two questions:

    1. What is the average teaching wage in Thailand? I'm guessing 35k per month, but maybe I'm wrong.

    2. Where can you make 100k a month teaching in Thailand? I know international schools pay good, but they're usually only 50k from the ads that I saw. I imagine if it's possible, you'd have to have a real teaching degree.

I had 2 'real' teacher mates in Bangkok when i lived there, as in they were proper qualified guys who had taught in England for x amount of years and they were both on in the region of 120,000 baht a month and that was back in 2002, tefl scum only earn 30-40k a month though if they are lucky.

I will be living in Pattaya soon and working at an International school. I will be earning over 100,000 Baht per month and will have housing allowance.

I will have to work for 36 weeks per year.

Not international. The first school was a small private school by the old airport and I got 35,000 plus a sweet condo. I only really took the job because of the condo. And the second was Twepangnam (spelling) the school that got in sh1t for thier nazi sports day. Ha ha. That was after I left. They paid us 45,000 but kept 3,000 which you could claim back at the end of the year if you stayed for 1 year. Sneaky knuts.

Teachers at the top handful of international schools make over 100k, and such schools recruit overseas to get experienced teachers and avoid recruiting people who took an education degree only because they want to earn a good salary in Thailand.

Teachers at the many other schools that call themselves international and yet have nearly all thais on the student register earn more like 60-80k

I know one teacher friend here in CM is on 180k at an International School. Presumably others at the same school are there or thereabouts too.

Unless that foreigner is the head master the figure seems absurd and more than likely bullshit.

    I don't think it's an easy life, as it's a job.

As for salaries, here is the bottom line: how much are these people sending home per month or per year?

If your not financially secure, and you are not investing, consider teaching for no more than 5 years.

There are teachers and there are TEFLers, these are not the same beast, one is highly educated and earns a damn good living with loads of benifits, the other has probably been down Khoa San road to buy a degree so he can earn a pittance teaching English.

Well as it happens it is Prem. Still fail to see what's so absurd about it though; that's what, 32K pounds gross per annum? Hardly an unrealistic or over-the-top figure is it, particularly when you consider the fees at that place.

    erm, expert are we?

I make my income from teaching, that has enabled me to invest and diversify in other areas, I have been here longer than 5 years.

Exactly, in fact I'd argue too low.

At Prem a figure like that could be possible if the person was working in some sort managerial capacity.

    Otherwise it is bollocks.

Actually I'd have to double check that; if it's before or after tax.

I suspect (from what I recall of the conversation) it was gross. If before tax then I definately agree with you, too low!

Yes, so you keep saying. I'm telling you it's not, perhaps you'd like to share this inside info you obviously have then?

I applied, unsuccessfully, for several teaching jobs in BKK that paid more than 150,000.

It does depend to some extent on what subjects you can teach to IB level

At a proper international school, a teacher will earn more than that. At Prem; fair enough.
