Suck it up, damn straight they should be criticised. Intentsely so as a matter of fact. It's what we from free and democratic societies would consider an inherent right to do - not something to be silenced as 'un-patriotic' or this nonsense.

You are seriously 'out-to-lunch' on this topic, anti.
The subject matter is what has your country done to improve the world's lot and here you go again with more America-bashing...

The 'subject matter' is about yet another precious whinge from those who can't handle legitimate criticsim...

Given the way the OP framed the question, it was rather asking for a little American bashing surely?

I'm not necessarily anti-American, but that was a rather provocative OP, no?

Well what have the Brits done? Well lets start with the Stevensons, the Brunels moving on to Faraday, Kelvin, Rowland Hill (who?). Simpson, Lister, Nightingale, and the great Jenner all pioneering bands of English sanitarians who alleviated the sting of disease. We taught everyone the nature of the world we live in, we mapped the Seas, the Earth, examined plants and animals. Darwin, Lyell, Spencer and Huxley replaced empirical theories by a history written in rocks, bone and living tissue.

On the nuclear front we had J J Thomson, James Chadwick, and Cockcroft and Walton who managed to split the atom in 1932.

The first computer, jet engine the WWW all British inventions.

I'm a bit confused, Jet. Are we supposed to list everything our native countries might have done to improve the world's lot? Or do you just mean politically? How far into the past are we allowed to go?

Whats the big deal about what your country has done?? none of these are your personal achievements.

    I like this quote...

Patriotism is your conviction that this country is superior to all other countries because you were born in it.

The bashing is because of the American belief in their supposed power status in the world. I was always taught to stand up to bullies and that's how I see America. As for promoting my own country. I can't. We Brits are not as patriotic as Americans, due to not being brain washed from birth that our country is the best.

Not a bad effort, considering that Ernie Rutherford first split the atom 15 years before....

^The Rule Brittania, Aussie and Canadian threads seem to more focused on that.
This thread reeks of insecurity I'm afraid Jet & co- and there seems to be a lot of insecurity in many Americans today.

One day I hope you will all 'get it', the difference between 'Bush bashing'- criticism of the Bush administration, or of longer term US government policies- and 'America bashing' - criticism of the US itself. Frankly the defensiveness of several of you to legitimate criticism of your governments policies is contributing to this very America bashing you decry.

Get something right- we do not owe any fealty or loyalty to your government of the day. And frankly, neither does a US citizen. The values that you owe your 'patriotism' too are embodied in such things as The Constitution, The Gettysburg Address and the Declaration of Independence, and ultimately safeguarded by The Judiciary. Not the PR spin of some government selling it's policies- soon there will be a new Presidency, and the same acid test will apply. Your government can be just as right or wrong as anybody elses- what makes you think that has any association with the size of your economy, military, WW2, the Cold 'War' or any of these other non-sequiturs you bring up?

Some of the sternest criticism of US government policy comes from US citizens, on this board and elsewhere- and I notice you 'Flag wavers' are particularly sensitive about that. Maybe you should stop, think and realise that this is a large of what made your country great in the first place.

Denmark is not a strong military power in any way, they do send whatever troops they have out where it's required, they are well trained and equiped, but to be the best in the world....I doubt that very much..

Difficult to measure objectively isn't it?

    What exactly would you measure?

The best killing machines - efficiency in killing as many enemies as possible?
The best for always obeying orders and serving their place as cogs in the machinery?
The best as in the best physique?
The best as in the most accurate shooters?
The best as in the shrewdest when it comes to strategy?
The best as in the best discipline?
The best as in the highest morals?
The best as in the best equipped?

Seems like some countries are getting wimpy in their NATO roles:

U.S. Secretary of Defence Robert Gates appeared to make a direct appeal to Europe on Sunday to support the war in Afghanistan, saying NATO's existence is at stake.
    CBC News
"We must not, we cannot, become a two-tiered alliance of those who are willing to fight and those who are not," he told a gathering of security and military experts in Munich, Germany.
"Such a development, with all its implications for collective security, would effectively destroy the alliance."
He urged European governments to make the case to their citizens that the war in Afghanistan is necessary to defeat Islamic extremism.
    ...
"Some allies ought not have the luxury of opting only for stability in civilian operations, forcing other allies to bear a disproportionate share of the fighting and the dying," Gates said.
    ...
Canadian, American, British and Dutch troops are deployed in the violent southern region, while countries like Germany, France and Italian troops are under self-imposed restrictions that keep them out of combat operations and in more stable provinces.

Militarily, Afghanistan is a stupid place to be unless you were invited or a Pakistani.

To argue that one clique within Nato is shouldering the burden of a stupid endeavour protecting another less inclined to share in the foolishness and attributing some virtue as a consequence suggests a rationale redolent of the American blunder in Vietnam.

Gorgon, only a blithering idiot would think that the Nato involvement in Afghanistan will end in anything other than a graceless exit.

Most cognoscenti are aware but the mindless tub thumping of 'Merakins and their apologists continually strives to drown out the voice of military reason. Wake up and stop being such a silly arse. Or are you menopausal?
