    US Acquisition of Greenland

Vance is ramping up the Greenland rhetoric

Sounds like they are serious this time

Vance scolds Denmark during Greenland trip

    .......

"We need Greenland, very importantly, for international security," he said.

"We have to have Greenland. It's not a question of: 'Do you think we can do without it?' We can't."

Vance scolds Denmark during Greenland trip

Putin has weighed in almost encouraging Trump to bust a move if negotiations do not bear fruit

Rosenberg: Putin nods to Trump plans to seize Greenland

    .....

"In short, America's plans in relation to Greenland are serious," President Putin said in an address to Russia's Arctic Forum in Murmansk.

"These plans have deep historical roots. And it's clear that the US will continue to systematically pursue its geo-strategic, military-political and economic interests in the Аrctic.

"As for Greenland this is a matter for two specific countries. It has nothing to do with us."

Putin says Greenland '''nothing to do with Russia''' in nod to US

The population of Greenland is less than 60,000, 90% of which are Eskimos

If popular opinion is all that stands in the way then why don't they just bribe the population to vote USA with $1M each. That would be about $60B which is probably less, in inflation adjusted real estate value terms, than the offer of $100M that was made to Denmark way back in 1946.

Most Eskimo families would walk away as retired multi-millionaires

The name is Inuit, you numpty. Shows just how out of touch you really are.
But hey, you do appear more than qualified for a cabinet position with the current administration. Maybe you could be the director of the Eskimo Bribery Program.

I don't really buy into the philosophy of perpetually renaming things out of some holier-than-thou posturing attempt at making yourself look more woke than the next wokist.

They were called Eskimos when I was a kid and Eskimos they shall remain.

If I am offered this position in the administration then I will make it part of the $1M bribery terms that they accept the term Eskimo as their true and correct ethnic moniker.

    Let's just call them Americans.

Or, Denmark puts Greenland up for sale, the UK exercises its right-to-buy option and it goes for one Pound. Then, in an unexpected twist, the UK leases the northern half to the USA for 99 years at USD10Billion per year, in gold, adjusted annually for inflation.

I like the sound of that, Shutree, but perhaps 10 billion is not enough. And it should be pounds not dollars.

Just because some else called them Eskimos does not make the name correct.

^Los Españoles don't get all pantzy when I call them Spaniards.

Eskimos is the English the name for the ethnic group of people who migrated from North East Asia and historically inhabited Northern North America

If they want to call themselves Inuit in their own language they are free to do so but people speaking other languages may have different terms for them.

Wrong, again, numpty. Linguists believe that “Eskimo“ is derived from the Montagnais word, ayaskimeu, meaning “netter of snow shoes.” Later bastardized by the French into the word, Esquimaux.
They haven’t used the term Eskimo, in almost 50 years.

Do you call the indigenous people of America, Indian?

Who gives a flying fok about these etymological hermeneutics.

They were commonly referred to as Eskimos in English for donkey's years and there is nothing wrong with their being a word in English for referring to an ethnic group which is different from the ethnic group's own name for themselves. The same is true in reverse for any speakers of any other language.

The reflexive urge to go scurrying frantically for the new politically safe word at the first ubiquitous accusation of 'offence' from left-wingers (usually white people taking offence on someone else's behalf) has gone past its sell by date. There is no need to indulge this pointless revisionist fetish.

No, I refer to them as Red Indians to distinguish them from Brown Indians, who invented my beloved Tandoori curry.

JD Vance's ominous pitch to Greenland
    ....

"We do not think that military force is ever going to be necessary," Vance said, perhaps attempting to sound reassuring.

    .....

Greenland: JD Vance takes ominous message to Danish territory

Does not sound very reassuring to me if I were a resident!

But anyway, it is a massive fokin island a 1/4 the size of Australia with important geographical location from a US security perspective with the thawing of the Arctic and it is almost part of the North American landmass.

When it has the microscopic total population of a medium sized town are the opinions of this tiny scattering of people all that important?

There is almost nobody there yet it claims to be autonomously 'self-governing'. This 'government' has the political heft of a town council.

Just bung them each a million bucks and they can ditch their snow shoes and retire in Florida.

JD Vance looks like he is bursting into song!

He left Greenland in less than three hours. The asshat never stepped foot off the military base. He made a fool of himself and the USA in front of the entire world. Once again, looper proves to be some MAGA asshat.

There is an unstated bit of irony here... One of the core beliefs of Trump and the MAGAs is that climate change is a hoax, but one of the main reasons for taking Greenland is that climate change will make it more habitable and make its resources more available over the next century or so.

If only Trump's 4th grade vocabulary included the words 'cognitive dissonance".

Hey Donald, you take Greenland and the Panama Canal and keep your mouth shut when we take Ukraine, Georgia, and Uzbekistan.

You will not insult an Inuit by calling his fellows Eskimos. All Inuit are Eskimos but not all Eskimos are Inuit.

    Don't Eat the Yellow Snow

"Don't Eat the Yellow Snow" is a suite by the American musician Frank Zappa, made up of the first four tracks of his 1974 album Apostrophe.

In keeping with the arctic theme of the song, after the first lyric "Dreamed I was an Eskimo" there is a musical quotation from the 1947 jazz tune "Midnight Sun".

"Don't Eat the Yellow Snow" is a song about a man who dreams that he was an Eskimo named Nanook. His mother warns him "Watch out where the huskies go, and don't you eat that yellow snow."

The song directly transitions into "Nanook Rubs It". The song is about Nanook encountering a fur trapper who is whipping Nanook's "favorite baby seal" with a "lead-filled snow shoe". Eventually Nanook gets so mad he rubs husky "wee wee" into the fur trapper's eyes, blinding him.

Add tariffs to the list - wasn't the USA an industrial pugilist in the past?

    Now he's chickening out.

Then there's his whining about the media misrepresenting the signal chat that informed its readers of when and where attacks on Yemen were going to take place.

    Not classified?

    What a joke.

And he and Melania have their own crypto currencies?

I kind of have to admire the chutzpah, but wtaf?

I admire you breaking down the crimes of this shitshow, which is a disgrace to the US, but let's keep it simple: it's a hate-filled far right authoritarian dictatorship pandering to an oligarchy.

The utter chaos engulfing the US at the moment will only intensify now the weather is starting to warm up and people hit the streets. They won't last the summer.

Positioning for a war with China at most and global dominance at least, where Russia needs to be our ally and access to rare earth minerals could win or loose you 'the war' or global dominance. For the record, I don't think this is China's aim but it doesn't half stop the US wanting to be paranoid for any reality they can find themselves in.
One should listen twice as much as one speaks
