The Duke of Sussex has enjoyed a brief reunion with the king after taking an overnight flight from California to visit his father following Buckingham Palace’s announcement of the monarch’s cancer diagnosis.

Prince Harry landed at Heathrow shortly after midday following an 11-hour flight from Los Angeles. Travelling alone, the Duchess of Sussex having stayed in the US with the couple’s two children, Harry was pictured being driven from the airport in a black Range Rover with a police escort.

He was driven straight to the king and queen’s London residence, Clarence House, where King Charles was resting after outpatient treatment on Monday for an undisclosed form of cancer.

About 45 minutes later, the king and queen were driven to Buckingham Palace to be flown by helicopter to the king’s private Sandringham estate in Norfolk.

It was King Charles’s first appearance in public since his diagnosis was announced, and he smiled and waved at well-wishers during the drive.

The likes of Chucky The Dinosaur, yes.

Unfortunately the youngish, handsome-ish, perfect down-to-earth family guy that will take over soon will be adored around the world during a 30 year reign, ensuring even bigger savings on the inheritance tax that should be due when it's his time. Today, he and wife Queen Camilla were photographed leaving by car from Clarence House, on their way to Buckingham Palace. (The London royal residences are about nine miles apart.)

Buckingham Palace announced yesterday that the king had been diagnosed with “a form of cancer,” identified during the treatment of benign enlarged prostate in late January. Following the news, King Charles left the royal estate in Sandringham to return to London, where he is now undergoing treatment as an outpatient.

The monarch’s younger son, Prince Harry, flew into London on Monday to be with Charles amid his health crisis. Heir to the throne Prince William, meanwhile, has taken on further engagements to support his father as the king steps back from some of his duties to heal.

While some of the king’s public engagements have been postponed, he “will continue to undertake state business and official paperwork as usual,” the palace said.

King issues first statement since diagnosis, with Palace and Downing Street keen to show he is still carrying out constitutional duties

Buckingham Palace and Downing Street were keen to demonstrate that King Charles remains in close contact with the government on Wednesday, even as he recovers from his first session of cancer treatment.

No 10 took the unusual step of confirming that Rishi Sunak would be telephoning the king in the evening after an agreement with the palace to disclose the information.

The prime minister’s official spokesperson said: “We don’t in general and we are not going to get into the habit of commenting on the PM’s conversations with the king. But we have agreed with the palace in this specific instance to confirm that they will be speaking on the phone later.”

Initially it was speculated that the formal weekly audience between head of state and prime minister, normally held in person and part of the monarch’s core constitutional duties, would be conducted over the phone.

However, a palace source later clarified it would be a personal call for the prime minister to wish Charles well and a speedy recovery, rather than an audience.

No audience had been scheduled for the next fortnight, partly in keeping with the pattern set by the late Queen Elizabeth II for this time of year, and also to allow the king to recover from his benign prostate enlargement procedure.

It is expected that on 21 February formal in-person audiences will resume, subject to any overseas commitments the prime minister may have.

Late on Wednesday the king issued his first public statement since his cancer diagnosis, as he marked Grenada’s 50th anniversary of independence from Britain.

He said: “I can only say how sorry I am that I cannot be with you in person to mark this momentous milestone … My thoughts are with everyone across Grenada, Carriacou and Petit Martinique, and all those in the Grenadian diaspora – ’one people, one family’ – as you celebrate everything you have achieved and all that your future holds. My family join me in sending our heartfelt congratulations to you all.”

The Queen has described King Charles as doing “extremely well under the circumstances” at her first public engagement since his cancer diagnosis was announced.

Camilla said her husband, who underwent his first bout of treatment earlier this week, was “very touched” by all the messages of support he has been receiving from the public.

The king, 75, has been spending his time at Sandringham in Norfolk after his diagnosis, which was announced by Buckingham Palace on Monday evening. The form of cancer has not been disclosed.

The Queen left Charles at Sandringham to fulfil her royal engagement at Salisbury Cathedral. Among the first people she met were medical staff from Wiltshire Air Ambulance on Thursday.

Ben Abbott, 40, a critical care paramedic, said: “I do hope his majesty is doing well ma’am, we’re all really sad to hear the news.”

The queen replied: “Well he’s doing extremely well under the circumstances, he’s very touched by all the letters and the messages the public have been sending from everywhere – that’s very cheering.”

The king has postponed all public-facing duties but is continuing with behind-the-scenes work on his red boxes of state papers.

I don't see the royals as being the major shortcoming in the UK's system of government. I think the major problem is how total twits have in recent decades risen to the top of the principal political parties and they have remained in office for years after they were recognized as being hopelessly out of their depth.

King Charles has spoken of his “lifelong admiration” for cancer charities and offered “heartfelt thanks” for messages of support received since he was diagnosed with cancer.

The king added that it was “heartening” that the announcement of his illness had helped shine a light on organisations supporting cancer patients and their families. Charities say the public focus on cancer has allowed them to highlight issues they had previously struggled to get attention for.

In a statement released on Saturday night, the king said: “I would like to express my most heartfelt thanks for the many messages of support and good wishes I have received in recent days.

“As all those who have been affected by cancer will know, such kind thoughts are the greatest comfort and encouragement.

“It is equally heartening to hear how sharing my own diagnosis has helped promote public understanding and shine a light on the work of all those organisations which support cancer patients and their families across the UK and wider world.

“My lifelong admiration for their tireless care and dedication is all the greater as a result of my own [at]personal experience.”

Charles, 75, is staying at the Sandringham estate in Norfolk while receiving treatment and has handed over public-facing duties to Prince William in the meantime but is continuing with official paperwork.

He was diagnosed with an unspecified cancer after receiving treatment for an enlarged prostate – tests identified a form of cancer that is not related to the prostate – and officials said that he wanted to share his diagnosis to assist public understanding of the diseases.

Charities with royal patrons said they had seen extraordinary amounts of attention since the news emerged.

Prostate Cancer UK saw a 500% rise in people visiting its website and the number of men using its online risk checker to see whether they should get a prostate checkup – usually a blood test.

The king is patron of Marie Curie and Macmillan Cancer Support, which said it had also seen a four-year high in visits to its website.

Maggie’s, whose patron is the queen, said the king’s decision to continue to work was very important since most people assume that cancer patients give up work. It means people with cancer often do not tell their employers and 40% even take holiday to go to appointments rather than sick leave.

Laura Lee, chief executive of Maggie’s, said people visiting Maggie’s centres are worried about keeping their jobs and being passed over for promotion if they reveal their condition.

“Everyone diagnosed with cancer should be aware that they have employment rights but also know that they don’t have to tell colleagues until they’re ready, if at all.”

Tenovus Cancer Care, a Welsh charity supported by the Princess Royal, said that it had been trying to persuade more men to join its All-Wales Cancer Community, which aims to give cancer patients and their families a greater say in how care is arranged.

Chief executive Judi Rhys said the public response had been “staggering”.“Despite the awful circumstances, it’s been really positive to see the amount of awareness it’s raised and conversations it’s sparked,” she said.

“[Cancer] is still a difficult subject for many people, particularly men. Men are more likely to develop cancer, but we see more women engage with our services. This means there will be a lot of men out there who aren’t getting help.

“We hugely admire the decision to share the king’s diagnosis, and we hope the national conversation will help other men to open up and reach out. The more we talk about it, the more lives we’ll save.”

King Charles has attended church in Sandringham in his first public outing since Buckingham Palace announced his cancer diagnosis.

The King waved to members of the public as he walked outside St Mary Magdalene Church with his wife, Queen Camilla.

It comes after the King, 75, thanked people on Saturday for their "support and good wishes" since the news.

He said all those affected by cancer knew "such kind thoughts" were "the greatest comfort and encouragement".

Around 100 well-wishers were gathered on Sunday as the King walked into church in Sandringham, briefly speaking with the Rev Canon Dr Paul Williams.

Crowds gathered around the gates of the private estate, but were not allowed to enter the grounds - which are closed to the public until Easter.

King Charles left Clarence House, London, for his Norfolk residence on Tuesday, accompanied by the Queen. His youngest son, the Duke of Sussex, had flown in from the US for a brief visit earlier that day.

The King's cancer was detected while he was undergoing treatment in London for an enlarged prostate in January.

While the type of cancer has not been disclosed, the Palace confirmed it was not prostate cancer.

King Charles has stepped back from all public-facing duties while he receives treatment, with senior royals - including Queen Camilla and the Prince of Wales - taking on his duties for some events.

In his message of thanks, the King wrote: "It is equally heartening to hear how sharing my own diagnosis has helped promote public understanding and shine a light on the work of all those organisations which support cancer patients and their families across the UK and wider world.

"My lifelong admiration for their tireless care and dedication is all the greater as a result of my own personal experience."

Before his message on Saturday, the Queen spoke at an event at Salisbury Cathedral on Thursday and described the support as "very cheering".

Prince William also expressed gratitude for messages of support for his father and for his wife, the Princess of Wales, as she recovers from abdominal surgery.

She is not expected to return to royal duties until after Easter.

The Prince of Wales has appointed a former diplomat as his private secretary, as he returns to royal duties after his father’s cancer diagnosis.

Ian Patrick, who has also worked for the former Liberal Democrat leader Paddy Ashdown, would take up the role, Kensington Palace said.

The prince resumed regular duties this week having taken time off to support his family after the Princess of Wales had planned abdominal surgery.

Prince William hosted an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle on Wednesday before attending the London air ambulance charity gala dinner later that evening, thanking the public for their messages of support for the king.

Addressing guests at the dinner, he said: “I’d like to take this opportunity to say thank you, also, for the kind messages of support for Catherine and for my father, especially in recent days. It means a great deal to us all.”

It was announced on Monday that Charles would have regular treatment for an unspecified cancer, found during a recent hospital stay for a procedure on an enlarged prostate.

William was expected to take over some engagements as the king’s diary was hastily rearranged and as Catherine recovers at Adelaide Cottage in Windsor. He had said he would return to work only once the princess’s care and recovery had settled. Catherine, 42, is not expected to resume official duties until after Easter.

Patrick worked under Lord Ashdown when he was in Bosnia from 2002 to 2006 before joining the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. He is a trustee of the charity Crohn’s & Colitis UK.

Charles the first should have been the last sponger, we had a chance to end this inherited nonsense but let them back. Only a matter of time before they are given the push again. That adulterous cow is not the Queen.

Prince Harry has said he was grateful to have been able to fly in from the US to visit his father, and hinted King Charles’s cancer diagnosis could heal the rift within the royal family.

In an interview with a US breakfast TV programme on Friday, the Duke of Sussex said his trip to London to see the king could be a step to reunifying his relatives after years of strained relations.

“I love my family. And the fact that I was able to get on a plane and go and see [my father] and spend any time with him, I’m grateful for that,” he told ABC’s Good Morning America from Whistler, Canada.

The host, Will Reeve, spoke of his own family’s reaction to his father, the late Superman actor Christopher Reeve, being paralysed in 1995. He said: “I’ve also found in my own life that sort of an illness in the family can have a galvanising or a sort of reunifying effect for a family. Is that possible in this case?”

Harry replied: “Absolutely. Yeah, I’m sure. Throughout all these families I see it on a day to day basis, again, the strength of the family unit coming together. I think any illness, any sickness brings families together.”

Prince Harry declined to divulge any information when asked about his outlook on his father’s health, saying: “That stays between me and him.” But he said he would visit him in the future. “I’ve got other trips planned that would take me through the UK or back to the UK, so I’ll stop in and see my family as much as I can,” he said.

Asked about his life in the US, and whether he had contemplated becoming a US citizen, the prince said he had considered it. Harry said: “The American citizenship is a thought that has crossed my mind but certainly not something that’s a high priority for me right now.”

It was Harry’s first interview since the king postponed all public-facing duties because of the diagnosis. He was also expected to discuss his life with the Duchess of Sussex and the Invictus Games during the broadcast.

Harry, who lives in California with his wife and their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, flew to the UK last week to see the king. He made the trip less than 24 hours after the public announcement about his father’s health. Meghan and their children remained in California.

There was no meeting with his brother, the Prince of Wales, after Harry’s 45-minute meeting at Clarence House with their father.

King Charles, 75, is staying at the Sandringham estate in Norfolk while receiving treatment. He has handed over public-facing duties to Prince William, but is continuing with official paperwork.

He was diagnosed with an unspecified cancer after receiving unrelated treatment for an enlarged prostate. Later tests identified a different form of cancer. Officials said the king wanted to share his diagnosis to assist public understanding of the disease.

The royals have been beset by health problems this year, with the Princess of Wales treated in hospital for 13 days after undergoing successful abdominal surgery. She is not expected to return to public duties until after Easter, but the exact time of her return was to be determined by medical advice, Kensington Palace said.

Meghan has joined her husband on the trip to Canada as part of a one-year countdown to the 2025 Invictus Games. The Duke of Sussex earlier tried the skeleton bobsled as he joined competitors training for next year’s event.

Harry’s interview took place after a week of announcements from himself and Meghan, with the duchess signing a deal with Lemonada Media to record new podcast shows. The company will distribute Meghan’s previous Archetypes series about female stereotypes, which ran for just one series before a lucrative deal with Spotify ended in 2023.

The couple also relaunched their Archewell website, the name of their foundation, rebranding it the Office of Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

King Charles' preferred crown has replaced Queen Elizabeth II's favoured symbol on the government website, marking his role of the head of state.

The logo can be seen on key pages on gov.uk as the site rebrands this month.

King Charles chose the rounded Tudor Crown for his royal cypher when he took the throne in 2022 - and it is being changed in places where his late mother's St Edward's Crown was shown.

These include post boxes, police uniforms and official buildings.

Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden says the government "takes pride" in the change, and it was funded from the website's usual operating costs.

If you are trying to spot the difference between the two crowns, the King's crown has a rounded dome while Queen Elizabeth II's has arches either side of the central cross.

The King's grandfather, George VI, also used the Tudor Crown for his cypher when he reigned between 1936 and 1952.

King Charles did wear the St Edward's Crown for his coronation in May last year, just as his mother did in 1953.

As well as the government website, King Charles' cypher can be found on official documents and some clothing. Beefeaters first donned "C R III" uniforms ahead of the King's coronation last year.

Charles' cypher, portrait or name will eventually find its way into a variety of places:

    Coins
    Banknotes
    Stamps
    Passports
    Official picture
    Post boxes

    _______

The pair appeared in good spirits under umbrellas as they were accompanied to church by Rev Canon Dr Paul Williams.

Police made sure kids were brought to the front of the crowd so they could get front-row seats of the King.

Debbie Figg, 59, said: "We are staying for the weekend and thought it was important to show support."

She came with Robin Figg, 68, and granddkids Harvey Emmanuel, ten, and Taylor Emmanuel, nine.

Taylor's message to the King was: "I hope you feel better."

Oscar Young, eight, said seeing the King was "very exciting".

While Ken Stone, 71, said: "There's so much else going on with family relationships that it's good to support him through this and when he's obviously going through a tough time himself physically."

Charles, 75, is staying at the 20,000 acre Sandringham as he undergoes treatment for cancer.

Prince William visits Red Cross as Middle East war rages

The Prince of Wales visited the British Red Cross at its headquarters in Central London where he heard about the humanitarian efforts taking place to support those affected by the conflict in the Middle East. It comes as Prince William issued a statement which called for an "end to the fighting as soon as possible," and spoke of the "terrible human cost of the conflict in the Middle East since the Hamas terrorist attack".
