Prominent Russians join protests against Ukraine war amid 1,800 arrests
Prominent Russians shocked by the invasion of Ukraine have gone public with their opposition to the war, despite the professional and personal risks that come with dissent on such a sensitive issue in Russia.
More than 1,800 people were arrested at rallies across the country on Thursday night as prominent Russians from the worlds of entertainment, business and journalism have risked their livelihoods in order to speak out.
When Elena Chernenko, the veteran diplomatic correspondent for Kommersant newspaper, found out that Russia was invading Ukraine, she said she was stunned.
“Of course, I was shocked … Until yesterday morning, I refused to believe that Russia could launch a massive military operation against Ukraine,” said Chernenko, who believed Russia may at most recognise the territories in south-east Ukraine.
“I thought that all the talk about invasions was awful hysteria. I argued with people on Twitter and in person that nothing would happen, it’s all thought up,” she said. “Maybe I don’t understand anything about Russian foreign policy anymore.”
After Putin announced the military operation, she penned an open letter condemning the attack on Ukraine. “War has never been and will never be a method of conflict resolution and there are no excuses for it,” she wrote. Nearly 300 journalists have signed, including representatives of state-run media.
In retaliation, she revealed she has been expelled from the diplomatic pool, which she has covered for more than 11 years, for “unprofessionalism”.
Chernenko remains a strong critic of Ukraine’s policy toward the Donbas region, but said she could not justify the kind of military operation now unfolding.
“There was nothing complicated about it for me,” Chernenko said of her letter. “It was a spontaneous reaction. My country has started a military operation against another … but we’re for diplomacy, we’re for the UN charter, moral values, brotherly nations, and all that. And I had the feeling that this is the wrong path.”
Popular actors and musicians, some of whom are employed by the government, have also spoken out and appear to have been punished for their dissent.

One young man held up a sign that said “Fuck the war!” Within seconds, four police officers had fallen on top of him, dragging him roughly to a police van as media and photographers crowded around.

^ Are they losing them though? No mention of confiscation which would be my preferred course, strip all the assets and hold them pending war reparations to Ukraine and its peoples.
I'm sure you would like that, but of course the tit for tat is that western owned assets in Russia would be confiscated too. They are not small.
You are either in the Alamo or outside it, from where i see it Russia is looking out.
There is an excellent Guardian article in the News thread about this mike, if you wish to read more. I posted it.
i have read plenty and lived enough not to be as ignorant or twisted in my views as you, OhOh or SoCal, i'm leaving it there because there really is no point in furthering this when you are so one dimensional.
Well if you are such a Humanist mike, perhaps you might demonstrate your objectivity by expressing sympathy for the victims of war in other countries too? With all due respect, Ukrainian casualty figures are a small fraction of those in Iraq, Afghan, Syria & Libya. And what is your view on the fact that the US government has stolen $9bn of Afghan government funds- while there are people close to starvation on the ground there?
I have stated my perspective- this war was thoroughly avoidable. An utter Failure of Diplomacy.
I would love to see some figures on that, if you have a source. EU assets in Russia exceed 137bn Euro. UK & US assets, I don't know- but BP owns 20% of Rosneft for example, and Shell has a lot invested in NS2.Quote:
nowhere as massive as individual Russians' assets
Whatever the sums, it is clear that Europe has one helluva lot to lose here, as indeed does Russia.
Yes, I suppose 137bn Euro is mere chump change for Oligarchs like you 'arry.
Stupid putin arselicker and your stupid scare stories.
If Russia nicks anything, it can be paid back out of this.
^ It was from The Guardian 'arry.
OK maybe not as dangerous. Less liquor on the streets
I saw this story first. Dated 2/25/22
Kansas liquor store removes Russian vodka from store shelves
A Kansas liquor store is removing Russian vodka from its store shelves, referring to it as a “tiny sanction” against Russia following the country's invasion of Ukraine.
And then more followed suit…………
Russian vodka being removed from shelves in U.S. and Canada
Some liquor stores and bars in the U.S. and Canada are taking Russian vodka off their shelves in protest of President Vladimir Putin's military invasion of Ukraine.
The latest: Utah Gov. Spencer Cox (R) issued an executive order on Saturday evening "requiring the Utah Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control to remove all Russian-produced and Russian-branded products from its shelves immediately," per a statement from the governor's office.
- "Russia's ruthless attack on a sovereign nation is an egregious violation of human rights," Cox said. "Utah stands in solidarity with Ukraine and will not support Russian enterprises, no matter how small the exchange."
The big picture: Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine (R) on Saturday ordered the state's Department of Commerce to halt the purchase and sale of all vodka made by Russian Standard, which he said was "the only overseas, Russian-owned distillery with vodka sold in Ohio."
- The Ohio Division of Liquor Control estimates that there are about 6,400 bottles of Russian Standard vodka for sale in Ohio's 487 liquor agencies across the state, according to DeWine.
- Ontario, Canada's most populous province, directed its liquor control board to withdraw all Russian products, Reuters reports, and liquor stores in the provinces of Manitoba and Newfoundland also said they were removing Russian spirits.
Zoom in: Jamie Stratton, partner and wine director of Jacob Liquor Exchange in Wichita, told KSNW Friday that he had removed more than 100 bottles of Russian vodka and expanded its section of Ukrainian vodka.
- "I think the whole world knows by now that Russia’s at war with Ukraine for no apparent reason," Stratton said. "I guess this is our sanction."
- Magic Mountain, a ski resort in Vermont, tweeted a video clip of a bartender pouring Stoli down the drain and saying: "Sorry, we don't sell Russian products here."
- A bar in Grand Rapids, Michigan, also removed bottles of Stolichnaya and Smirnoff from shelves, M Live reports. "It’s a protest against the aggression," said the bar's owner, Bob Quay. "I just made the decision on the spot. It’s something little we can do."
Between the lines: Some establishments appear to be making a statement of support for Ukraine as well as raising funds for humanitarian efforts.
- Evel Pie, a bar in Las Vegas, announced it's boycotting Russian-made vodka. It's now selling shots of Ukrainian liquor, with 100% of the proceeds to benefit humanitarian relief efforts in Ukraine.
- "Our focus first and foremost is helping the Ukrainian people," managing partner Branden Powers told the Las Vegas Sun.

Good speech from the squareheads:
- The War is Putin's war not Russia's.
- Germany needs to meet it's 2%-of-GDP NATO obligation.
- Germany needs to reduce its dependence on Russian oil and gas.
Putin can shove his pipes up his arse. Europe can source gas from Qatar, the US, Canada, and if Iran realise they can exploit the opportunity and give up their nuclear capabilities, them too.
Priceless

Anti-war protesters detained in Moscow — RT Russia & Former Soviet Union
Russian population is 144,100,000 (2020), <0.001% of the Russian population protested.
Russia has 1294 cities, 3 with protests, <1% of the Russian cities protested.
Another two statistics that one suspects the Russian government has little to worry about.
^ those that had the courage to turn out and protest, you do know that protests aren't allowed in Russia, much like China. The numbers arrested aren't a reflection of the nationwide hate for Putin and his actions.
Due to the Fort Detrick ,Maryland, NaGastan bioweapon release, worldwide, I read.
One wonders why it was posted on the thread, if not to suggest the event/numbers were relevant.

Ukraine, Russia agree to talks ‘without preconditions’: Zelenskyy
Ukraine announces talks ‘without preconditions’ as its foreign minister says his country will ‘not give up a single inch of territory’.
27 Feb 2022
"Ukraine and Russia have agreed to hold talks at a venue near the Belarusian border, as Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said his country will “not give up a single inch of … territory”.
The talks, the first since Russia unleashed a full-scale invasion of Ukraine last week, would be held without preconditions and are the result of a phone call between Zelenskyy and the Belarusian president, the Ukrainian leader said.
“We agreed that the Ukrainian delegation would meet with the Russian delegation without preconditions on the Ukrainian-Belarusian border, near the Pripyat River,” he said in a statement.
Al Jazeera’s Dorsa Jabbari, reporting from Moscow, said there was “some confusion” about where the Ukraine-Russia talks will take place.
“The Ukrainians are saying these talks will be held near the Ukrainian-Belarusian border, but according to the Russians, they believe, still, that the talks will take place in the southeastern city of Gomel in Belarus,” she said.
“There seems to be some confusion about where the location for these talks will be.”
The Ukrainian foreign minister in a televised speech on Sunday said his country will “not give up a single inch of … territory” after agreeing to talks with Moscow.
“We go there [to the talks] to listen to what Russia wants to say, we are going without any … preliminary agreement on what the outcome of these talks can be. We are going there to listen and to say what we think of this war and Russia’s actions,” Kuleba said in a televised address.
“Between now and the moment that the talks are wrapped up, [Belarusian President Alexander] Lukashenko assured President Zelenskyy that no Belarusian military force will be used against Ukraine,” he added.
“We can only hope that Lukashenko will stick to his word. And between now and the moment when these talks are wrapped up, we will continue to fiercely defend our country, to defeat Russian forces if they try to continue their offensive operations.
Al Jazeera’s Andrew Simmons, reporting from Lviv in western Ukraine, said the reportedly agreed talks was a positive sign but far from a breakthrough.
“The Ukrainians seem to be very weary about the talks agreed on. They say they will get along to listen to Russia on what it has to offer,” he said.
He added that the Kyiv government would not want to hear anything related to surrendering if Moscow is only prepared to make such an offer.
Zelenskyy previously rejected Belarus, an ally of Moscow which used it as a staging ground for its multipronged invasion, as a location for potential talks.
Speaking in Russian in a video message on Sunday, Zelenskyy listed the cities of Warsaw, Bratislava, Istanbul, Budapest or Baku as possible alternative venues."

Russia, Ukraine to hold talks on Belarusian-Ukrainian border - news agency
The particular venue of the meeting won’t be disclosed
27 Feb, 22:09
"MINSK, February 27. /TASS/. Talks between the Russian and Ukrainian delegations, which are due to be held in the Gomel Region, will take place on the Belarusian-Ukrainian border, BelTA news agency reported.
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s office confirmed that the meeting between the Ukrainian and Russian delegations will be held without any preconditions on the border in the area of the Pripyat River.
Earlier in the day, Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko called Zelensky. "The politicians agreed that the Ukrainian delegation would meet with the Russian one without any preconditions on the Ukrainian-Belarusian border, in the area of the Pripyat River," the statement said.
The particular venue of the meeting won’t be disclosed, a source told TASS.
Lukashenko undertook responsibility that "all planes, helicopters and missiles" stationed on Belarusian soil will remain on the ground during the talks, as well as the Ukrainian delegation’ arrival and return.
Earlier on Sunday, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov announced that the Russian delegation had arrived in Belarus for talks with Ukraine. The delegation consists of representatives of the Foreign Ministry, the Defense Ministry and other agencies, including the presidential administration. Presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky leads the delegation. The Ukrainian delegation also has left for Gomel to hold talks with Russia, Head of the Roundtable Democratic Forces Yury Voskresensky confirmed.
According to BelTA, after the phone conversation with Zelensky Lukashenko asked Putin that the Russian delegation should stay longer and postpone the meeting due to the delayed arrival of the Ukrainian delegation. Putin accepted the Belarusian counterpart’s proposal.
Earlier, Zelensky stated that he was willing to hold talks in any other venue, but not in Belarus, since it was allegedly engaged in some aggressive actions."
