Whats great about living in Phuket

The climates great, rarely to hot and never to cold Good shopping centres and hospitals Three live shows, movie theatres and bowling alleys etc All types of sports are played Restaurants as cheap as chips compered to Australia Very central to travel to other holiday destinations if you want to Food is not expensive here even the imported items Renting a house is cheap and buying one is not expensive if you take your time and shop around yourself Nice beaches

just reviewed the whole of thailand there, wouldnt live in phuket though, could think of much better places

Very near Kanchanaburi the bridge over the river Kwai 1 hour on a motor bike
Restaurants yes only Western ,Thai & also dog food KFC
With in 20klm from my home I can buy Australia beef, NZ lamb & good cheese

If you go to Thailand you are at the mercy of the criminal element which I think extends to the police. There is no law and order even on the roads. My wife, young 6 old son and I were walking to our hotel in Phuket when 5 thugs came up behind us and one grabbed our son, the others started demanding say you want your baby give us your money. My wife and son were screaming. I gave them what we had about 1,500 bart and then they just walked off. They did have a care in the world. We reported it to police and they said there is nothing they can do absolutely no help what so ever. Will never go back to that evil place.

I have been to Phuket and it was ok nothing fantastic. We were never the victims of crime but did witness a couple of incidents over a period of 4 days. One was similar where 2 guys rode past on a scooter and snatch a bag from an elderly tourist knocking her to the ground. The other incident was on the busy beach where 4 Thai guys were apparently beating up on a tourist, knocked him to the ground and were kicking him. The police were about 15 metres away and I pointed it out them, they just casually walked over and said something to the Thai guys for a second or 2 then the guys and police walked off in opposite direction they didn't even speak or check on the tourist who was still laying bloodied on the sand. My wife and I just looked at each other in amazement. The impression left on us is that Thailand is a lawless society and we do not think we will return.

@tasmaniantessie. I have to agree with you my family and I would go to Thailand every year for our holiday as it was cheap and the people were nice but for a few years we saw it declining rapidly the people lost thier smiles and it was becomming violent from what we saw in the streets of Phuket. We don't go back anymore and now go to Vietnam which is actually cheaper and the people much more friendly

Ah but Rodney there is also a huge difference between Perth and Thailand if you report a robbery and serious assault to the Perth police they will actually take a report. My wife was walking out of a 7/11 in Phuket when 3 thugs punched her, knocked her to the ground and ran off with her bag in broad daylight. We went to the Police and were told there was nothing they could do and we should just be more careful, they didn't even take a report. Thailand is dangerous and we won't be going back. Bali or Vietnam this year.

I was in Phuket last year and just walking down the street with 3 friends, it was 2.30 in the afternoon and a motorbike with 2 men on it stopped, one guy cut my bag strap and tried to get my bag he then punched me in the face breaking my nose and dragged me a little way before they took off. We went to the police who told us there were no witnesses and my friends did not count so there was nothing they could do. We told them there were many people in the street but they kept saying no witnesses and I should not carry a handbag in Thailand it was my fault. I will never go back to that country never ever.

We rarely go out in the evening and if we do its to a restaurant
I have never felt threatened or unsafe here
When we were in Cape Town last year we were told not to go into the central business district in the evening as it was unsafe so we did not go
Most of the assaults here happen around bars or red light areas or areas where the businesses close early, you avoid those areas as you would in any country in the world, you do not get gunmen going into schools and shooting students here

Frankly, though, I have no idea why anyone would wish to forsake Australia for Thailand when all that they seem to be seeking is already in their backyards, so to speak. It can't be a matter of expense since for many the living in Oz is extremely easy viz unlimited lamb chops and no heating bills.

We Brits however must contend with a fickle climate which curtails enjoyment on so many levels and thus the undoubted superiority of, say, Budleigh Salterton is seldom realised and one must migrate out of necessity.

What makes you think there are no heating bills in Australia in the winter
There is a semi govt body called The Lamb Board in Western Australia which controls the supply and price of lamb, thats why New Zealand lamb is cheaper here than lamb is in Australia
The climate in Phuket varies daily from 32 to 24C all the year round, only have to use the air conditioning at night to take the humidity out of the air and make it comfortable to sleep and not every night
Brits get homesick very quickly even in Australia and want to return to there fickle climate
Don't prefer Thai men means you are not gay, i bet you think Thai women are OK
I personally have not forsaken Australia i can return anytime and as often as i want to
Patong does not represent Phuket or Thai people and i would never live there

I've lived in Phuket for about the past 10 years. Like most places, it has gone downhill in many ways. That's not unique to Phuket, but bad events always make news headlines.

I still enjoy living here, but that is because I live far away from the expat 'ghettos'. I live right by the airport and there are still very few foreigners living in this region. I can still leave my doors open and unlocked at night - no need for any alarm system or guard dog.

The beach is nearby (600 metres) and it's the safest beach to swim at in low season, (no rip currents).

There are many restaurants and bars on the beach, and female company is obtainable at a farang price. But the local Thai karaokee bars offer a much better selection at a lower price.

The only minus point is that I'm living/working 200 metres away from the runway at the international airport, so I am slowly being driven deaf by the noise....

All in all. it's a good place to live, so long as other expats don't move in (I'm a miserable git and want to have the monopoly on moaning)

Its quite plain to me you do not live here, all holiday destinations are expensive for tourists and phuket is one of the least expensive tourist destinations
Patong, kata Karon and Kamala are the main tourist spots are are more expensive than the rest of the island.
Simon is happy living in the north of the island and i am happy living in the south and it is not expensive to live here, where we live there is very little traffic and no air pollution or noise and no crime that i have heard of in our location

Crime is not limited to Thai people in recent times a UK citizen stabbed someone to dead, a American citizen murdered his lady and put her body in a suitcase and dumped it, a Norwegian citizen killed his lady and kept the body in a tub of pool chemicals in a locked bathroom in his house, thats weird

I'm no fan of tourist Phuket, neither frankly a fan of living in any part of Thailand with too many farangs- which in turn translates to too much whinging, overpriced beer, and unfortunately, an increase in crime. But if I want to know the 'best' of Phuket, I would listen to resident expats.

I'm visiting Phuket quite soon, but have nil intention of setting foot in Patong. I'll get to know Rawaii & Phuket town better instead.

The Green man is a overpriced dump with a lot of ex UK big white bawana types who go there regularly, not over priced for farang food but not cheap for Thailand
You can get Guinness in the Irish Times and several other outlets in Patong not cheap about the same price you pay in Australia, its imported there to
English beer you drink it at room temperature unless things have changed YUK
