When did tourism really take off in Thailand? I'm guessing early 90's?
Hell, I've only been here 7 years and the change has been remarkable.

90 to say about 99 you could always find a parking place whatever Soi you went on in Pattaya, Pattaya 2nd road was 2 way, early 90s mobile phones cost 40k baht and you were not allowed them unless you had a work permit, land lines was a minimum 2 years waiting list, no second hand or new car showrooms or lots, riding down the road without a helmet and a bottle of beer in your hand was quite normal, Walking Street was not for Walking, satelite dishes you had to get permission from the military so only a few hotels had them, girls used to grab you by your cock in the street to drag you into their bar, no closing times, fok, Pattaya has gone down hill

    Walking street

Walking street doesn't look like the 'danger zone' it is now requiring 30 tourist police volunteers to "Keep the peace"....

I only discovered Pattaya 5 years ago. Looks like I was 20 odd years late. And Ko Samet has now gone to shite. The Scandies don't seem to appreciate that Thailands charm is in its... well charm to be frank. It didn't need modern, ugly resorts. It was ok with the ram shackle timber beach bars and huts.

I don't think you would get the same reaction today if you pointed a video camera in a bar girls face. Most probably get a stream of Thai profanities.

Pattaya was not franchised a la TONY's back then, no Russian gogos or anything either.

We used to do speed racing on 3rd road being just built up, unhinged by traffic or red lights.

    And 24/7 meant 24/7!

All the same, I blushed when I heard "Handsome man, please sit down "

... Nothing like the first time!
