Be advised the road is really BAD,
1 km they ware working on it and its all deep mud,
another 40 kms or so of really bad pot holed asphalt
Worst i have ever seen

I drove that road a couple of years back. Was o.k. leaving Mae Sot following the river vally past the Burmese refugee camps but when it veared to the right to head over the mountains it was pretty bad even then. Although for about the first 3 hundred metres there was a new dual carriageway in the middle of nowhere. After that it was shit, especially in my little sports coupe. Supprised they're still working on it.
it was great in 2009 now......
Last trip took me all over 7,200 kms.
worst roads were
Thailand 40 kms cracked asphalt/dirt
Laos 60 kms hard packed and soft dirt, plus 40 kms or so of rutted dirt visiting site 3 for the plain of Jars
70 kms Cambodia ( last section from Phnom Penh to Kep) hard packed dirt in the rain
Other than that some really great roads,
Highlights;
Chang Dao to Doi Ang Khong to Fang was absolutly fantastic!!!
Chaing Khong to Luang Prabang Laos via Luang Namtha, kms and kms in the clouds
Putting together my photo trip essay
I drove from Mae Sot to Mae Sariang this May, the road is very good except 2 sectons of some 10 km each that is really bad, however, can be survived. It seems that they also this bad sections will be reconstructed soon.
Along the way, mostly along the river creating a border between Thailand and Myanmar, is really a beautiful landscape.
