I think I saw the Biker bar today, its an old place painted in garish red if that the one, apparently the guy has thrown a heap of money into it and is paying 30 k PCM rent which is about 4 times what anyone else is paying in the street. The old Chinese who own properties in that street must be loving it.

Anyway the purpose of going out was to have a meal at the Irish clock and it was well worth it.
Old time Roast beef, nice roast potatoes and vegetables cooked just right, covered in a suburb gravy.
The kids have chicken & chips and the rate they went down it obviously met with their approval.
Missus had some Thai crap which she said was OK. All washed down with a couple of pints of Tiger.
Total price with an ice cream each for the ankle biters was under 700 Bht. Hard to beat that.

I stayed at the Irish Clock a few years ago, nice big rooms and very good prices compared to Pattaya. The included breakfast was excellent.

One thing that stands out in Udon for me are the people, both Thai and Western. I live in a small village, about 8 Brits, 6 Yanks, 6 Germans and a few other Danes, Ozzies etc.
Everyone gets on together and provides support if necessary.
Recently one guy suffered a serious fall. he's still in intensive care and despite the fact that he's in a coma, he has visitors every nite.
People are sending photos and reports to his family.

Living here has its plusses and for a family with young children its hard to beat, for the age that my children are, I think even the education is good, their school is well equipped and seems to be professionally run, certainly the appearance is superior to anything I have attended, well kept grounds, flower gardens etc.

Well guys if yuo are expecting a Pattaya experience in Udon you will be disappointed. Much more lay back and low key here. So that being said, please dont take it out on the locals, if it is not the Pattaya experience

    Udon has changed

Udon has changed. What you guys are describing is nothing like the Udon I remember. It was only a few small streets but had the friendliest people I have ever met. Some of them had fantastic memories. Like the girl I left sleeping in the Udon hotel where I had to jump off the balcony to a nearby electric pole. Got splinters in my legs as I slid to the ground.
3 months later she sees me again and threatens me with a knife. Seems I forgot to pay her. Damned she had a temper. hope she doenst still remember me. I do plan on coming back again
Oh yea. The last time I was there was in 1965 and 66. I was a 19 year old kid. Loved Udon Thani

A pretty low trick in my books, but I'll put it down to youthful folly.

The Udonites are indeed very friendly and nice people. They basically are all over Isaan, but they are more used to us Westerners up there. This of course goes back to Vietnam days.

well back to the main topic of this thread...... Udon Day and Night is really starting to progress. Looks like the grand opening of 1st July is still on course. Owners have been told to come in and measure up. Ok i know its not walking street but for the 10 bars that got shut down on 30th april its looking good for customers.

keep checking out the website as the forum opens soon

Yes Soi Farang did become a dump, the toilets in some of the bars were unpleasant.
Each bar in this new complex has brand new toilet facilities.
    I'm all for more choice.

Because we're teenagers compared to the rest. I even get carded when I go there. Fortunately I got a fake OAP bus pass from Khao San Road.

There is a spirited discussion gong on in Udon map re the viability of the D & N beer bar complex. Basically someone counted the Farang bars in Udon at 47 in total now, and they are building more.
In that Soi there are a few quite well done out bars now, Bar code, Yellow moon etc and they do fvck all business.
The odd customer here and there but certainly not enough to sustain a viable business, now they are going to add another 20 odd!
Where the hell do these owners think they are going to get their customers from I wonder?
When I lived in Bangkok I would go out for a few beers 2 -3 nights a week, Soi 33, 22, Cowboy or Gulliver's occasionally, but here no.
Apart from the occasional Sunday meal at the Irish I never go to bars, they are dead boring, customers, skanks, slagdogs, bars themselves, I find the experience a complete and utter bore and I'm a boring old fart myself.
Yet the stupids are lining up to pay their 60k deposit for a cramped single unit, presumably double that for a size in which you can swing a cat. Why ?

The bar that I went to with TGS, Tex and GP in Nong Kai I would patronize if it was nearer, seemed to be well run, pleasant outlook and seemingly good food and of course with illustrious company like the aforementioned gentlemen, a pleasant time, so I'm not that hard to please.

They are/were a brand of underwear for those who suffer embarrassing leakages, often advertised in magazines catering for our more advanced members of scoiety.
