    kids passport

hi everyone, just wondering if anyone can shed any light on a passport issue for me. My son ( who is Half thai ) is only 9 weeks old and won't be travelling to thailand until next year but the wife is already hassling me about this. Is it better to get a thai passport for my son from the thai embassy in the u.k before we travel, or should we sort it out when we return to thailand. does it even matter either way ? I'm relying on the infinite wisdom i have observed on this forum for a while now, i know you guys know details of stuff i would never think about. Cheers for any info.

Well, first of all - to be pedantic but really just for fun - your son is not "half Thai", he's Thai with Dual Nationality - and, to forstall the next question, since you appear to be a U.K. National there is absolutely no problem with him holding both Thai and U.K. Nationalities.

To answer your question - it all depends on where your son was born.

If, as I suspect from your Post, he was not born in Thailand he can only obtain a Thai Passport from the Thai Embassy in the Country where he was born - in this case apparently the U.K..

You can not get this done in Thailand.

Talk to the Thai Embassy in London and they will walk you through the process.

He can have Thai nationality without having to get a passport, as i said if you are living full time in the UK no reason to get a Thai passport, my daughters has expired and i have no urge to renew it as not needed, just use her UK one.

Long time since I did this but if I remember correctly you need to get a thai birth certificate from the Thai Embassy in London before you can apply for a passport.
There is a time limit for this so get it done soon.

You must get the Birth Certificate from the thai Embassy in London.

When we went to do this they asked if we would like the passport at the same time, so it was done in parallel not series.

There maybe a time limit, but at 9 weeks he's nowhere close to it, mune were 6 and 4 when I did it, as they refused to help in any way here.

Just fill in the forms and DHL it to Hong Kong. Courier fees are less than 1000B return.

Easy. Download the forms off the Embassy website. Fill it out. Send your passport, the wife's passport(even though it doesn't tell you on the website),translated copy of childs birth certificate, the fee, marriage certificate and your original birth certificate. They return all documents within 2 weeks and they send the application to Hong Kong. It will be returned in about 6 weeks by DHL. No need what so ever to visit the Embassy in person.
