Thread: toyota fortuner 2.4 engine

in the new fortuner only the top model has a 2.8 engine the other 2 models have 2.4 engines
the top model has features i am not interested in which are mainly electronic driving aids and difference seat covers which cost a extra 200,000 baht
the base and mid range models only come with the 2.4 engine, does anyone own one of these models and does it have enough power when you have 6 adult passengers in it
i have a broken arm at present and am unable to test drive one myself and would value current owners opinion of their vehicles

I bought a ford wildtrack in 2012 with a 2.2 engine and that had plenty of power for my requirements so a 2.4 engine should be fine
unfortunately Toyota are offering shit deals on a new fortuners at present, no discount, no free accessorizes or free insurance
their trade in values are shit to only 50% of what i paid for the hilux in 2017
if they do not get their act together i may buy a Mitsubishi Prado instead, cheaper, better equipped and the best rated SUV in Australia in 2020

I have a 2.4 Fortuner. Mostly cruise around ~110kph in ECO mode. 9.3 l/100k
Overtaking it is easy to hit 140kph.
With 7 people and loaded up I use POWER mode.
Never felt underpowered.

All pickups are diesel in Thailand. The Fortuna is based on a pickup.

yes it is and its the type of engine i want, i am not interested in a petrol engine SUV

that's right but i think the new model may have coil springs at the rear which give a more comfortable ride than leaf springs
I have not inspected one at present. waiting for Toyota to offer better deals in a few months time

Actually that statement would hold true if we compared petrol to diesel powered engines from say 10 years ago. However that has changed to the point now that nowadays diesel engines are nearly comparable to petrol engines from a emission point of view.

As with every year, controls are increased so they get better. The challenge that exists is what to do with 10 year old petrol and diesel powered vehicles?

I can stand behind my Hilux and never smell diesel fumes nor when I stomp on it does it belch black smoke. They are very efficient.

Just for comparison, I have a Pajero sport with the 2.4L, which reports suggest has a worse fuel consumption c.f. 12l/100k, However, driving around at 80-100kph in 2wd, I get around 7-8l/100kph. Pulling power has never been an issue.

i currently own a 2.8 hilux, i do not check my fuel consumption while driving in phuket because of the poor driving conditions and usually heavy traffic
but when we go for a drive off the island from rawai in the south end of the island to kho lak or krabi i usually get 6.9 litres per 100 klm providing i do not get stuck in traffic jams on the way home
i always drive in the economy mode and the hilux never lacks power, only tried power mode once and found it not necessary

The petrol version was a 2.7.

None of the current lineup of Fortuners are offered with the petrolengine.

there are 3 models in the fortuner 4wd 2.4v, 2.4 legender, 2.8 lengender prices 1524000 , 1634000 and 1839000
and what do you get for spending a extra 300,000 baht, not much
base model has black leather seats, mid model black and maroon seats, top model black and white leather seats ( white seats on a 4x4 they must have rocks for brains)
Base model has 17 inch wheels and normal profile tires ( ideal for off road driving),mid model 18 inch wheels, top model 20 inch wheels and low profile tires (just what you do not need for off road driving)
Top model has lane control and auto braking and all around camera, base model has revering camera (all i would ever use)
They have slightly different interior trim and front grill ( i like the look of the base model)
I think the base model has a electric tailgate push button operated, and the 2 other models kick activated tailgate (how often do you open a tailgate and is it a hard job to push a button to do it)
So in my opinion you are paying 300K extra for things you do not need

There are more than 3 models Peter, in both 2.4/2.8 and 2WD/4WD options (although the two 2.8 variants only come in the high spec 'Legender' spec.

That is the case with most of the top of line offered vehicles here. Offer lots of aesthetic things, a few trim packages usually god awful outside decals but the question is as a consumer, do you really need or want them. Some its about having the badges on the car stating you bought the top model Like the Platinum on Ford, or the TRD for Toyota etc

When I bought my Hilux I bought the top of the line because I wanted the HID light pkg, the power adjustable seats and the lesser models had standard bulb, a generic front end look and manual basic front seats. I did not buy the TRD Sportivo (dumb ass name) as the TRD option is an absolute waste of money. I then immediately (<700km on it), swapped out all the suspension and added my Toytec 3" lift kit with real shocks, dumped the drum brakes for rear disc brakes, full skid plate package and my forged TRD wheels with bigger tires. I would have preferred to have bought the base model because I was going to heavily modify it anyway but such as life.

I miss the days when you had a check list of what you wanted on your vehicle. Now you get a few options, take it or leave it.

OOhh Wait to hear what we do to them over here, Increase the power and torque 50% These Isuzu 1.9, 2.5 and 3.0 commonrail diesels can pump out enormous power by by-passing the eco crap. Would you believe a 8 second quarter mile in a 3.0 liter dmax?

yes i know that mate, but in the 4WD model which is the one i am interested in there are only 3 models

yes i know mate, i buy the 4x4 model because it allows me to go off road if i want to, not to drive thru mud holes and damage my vehicle, i will always take the side or chicken track which you find at most places where there is a mud hole, jump ups or other type of obstacle on a track
like you i bought the top of the range hilux because all of the extra features were items i wanted, that does not apply with the fortuner models available at present
the base model has all the features i will ever use or want to use
