Thai Wooden Furniture, The Old Stuff

Every other day I see old wooden Thai furniture, I never think to take photos of it, shame really as some of the stuff, ie beds, wardrobes and that that I have seen are quite remarkable, Thai wood is rock hard so if the termites don't get it in the first couple of years they never will.

First up is some seating for the patio.



May look a bit tatty and bitsy for some people, probably made from scraps and in a previous life was something else.

Here is something even the fattest person in the world couldn't break, the seat that is, not the table.

Got to admit this does appeal to me



So what sort of old wooden furniture have you got dumped round your area?

I think it might just be a case of of making furniture with what ever is available and can be afforded. Old in that the wood is old but the furniture looking the way it does is probably more from sitting in the elements without a whole lot of care more so than being old itself. Antiques they are not. I bet if the pieces would be sanded down, stained, and varnished though that they would look nice again.

I had a friend that lived in BKK for a few years in the late 1990's. He found this used furniture store that restored old pieces of furniture. He would stop there every couple of weeks and check out what they had received (they didnt do the restoration until someone bought it) - get got some fantastic pieces of old furniture that had been nicely restored for small money. No idea where it was, however (I went there with him once but didnt know my way around).

There is a place called Paul's Antiques. 50 Soi 13 Sukhumvit, Klongtoey?

He restores and sells old furniture or make anything you like out of old furniture wood. Bought some really nice things there and not expensive, for a small fee they deliver anywhere in Thailand.

The old furniture in the pictures made out of big chunks of wood, don't look very comfortable to me to sit on for a while. I have a bad back, wouldn't be able to sit on those for 5minutes.

Right, I admit this can't be called old, or even old wood, but once it is in your garden it doesn't have much more than a 3 year life span before it is destroyed by all the little insects, so it is near the end of its useful life.

Now a set like this in the photo costs less than 2,000baht, at that price it really isn't worth trying to maintain it as it really should just be considered a disposable item, but it does look quite good, plus the roof keeps the sun off of you, all in all the bamboo furniture in Thailand is quite a bargain, I have seen some 3 piece living room suites made using bamboo of which each piece is like nearly 10 inches in diameter, must admit that that did look fantastic, big and bulky but really did look good.

This table must be one of the heaviest and biggest around, an amazing bit of wood, all one piece, around 1m by 4m long, and at least 12cm thick
