I think you will find your strange animals are called Guinee Fowl. They can be very noisy when disturbed, ideal guard dogs!

gai tot would translate as "farting chicken", wouldn't it?

if he's talking about the ones in the background, they are guinea-fowl.

the ones in the foreground are normal ugly thai farting chickens!

Look like Cassowary birds, though I know very little about them and a quick search tells me there are a few species so have a look around on the net, sure you can identify them properly.

Quick read of wikipedia says something very surprising, apparently they are tough little bastards!

    Cassowary attacks

Cassowaries have a reputation for being dangerous to people and domestic animals. The 2007 edition of the Guinness World Records lists the cassowary as the world's most dangerous bird. During World War II American and Australian troops stationed in New Guinea were warned to steer clear of them. Many internet entries about cassowaries state that they can disembowel a man or dog with one kick, with the long second toe claw cutting the gut open.

Surely I have made a mistake here, they do look similar but they cassowaries are the third largest bird but I've seen birds like yours all over Thailand and they have never been that large.

Had a few beers tonight, bear with me lads!

^ A quick search reveals you are right Nedwalk, thought it all sounded a bit odd when I read a bit about them.

I'll stick to fish in the future.

    "Guinea Fowl
Guinea Fowl, a bird related to the pheasant. It is native to Africa, but has been domesticated in the United States and other countries. The common guinea fowl is about the size of a small plump hen. Its naked head is topped by a bony ridge. The bird has slate-gray plumage dotted with round white spots. White and lavender varieties are also raised. The guinea fowl's flesh resembles the flesh of wild game in color and flavor. Guinea fowl were originally kept by farmers because their noisy cries warn other poultry of approaching danger.

Had a few of them years ago but had to get rid of them because they were beating up the chooks and putting them off the lay.

they may look plump but when you pull out the feathers, they are just as scrawny (and just as tough to chew on) as thai village chickens.

Tell me about it. One of those bastards took a small chunk out of my hand at the Gorge Wildlife Park in the Adelaide Hills. I was only trying to feed the bloody thing.

The poor bird was just probably trying to protect her nest.
Though if you have a gut like that in your activar I could understand your concerns about being disemboweled.

    How did it taste anyway?
