Guatemala indigenous group lynches six murder suspects

Six people have been lynched and killed by members of an indigenous community in northern Guatemala, officials say.

Emergency services said local residents of San Pedro Carcha in Alta Verapaz province marched five men and a woman to a corn field, where they were beaten, blindfolded and shot dead.

The villagers suspected the six of killing a local businessman.

Prosecutors say 194 people have been lynched since 2004, mainly in areas where there was little police presence.

Guatemala's Prosecutors Office for Human Rights says the cases of lynchings have been rising year on year, with a marked increase in indigenous communities, where there is little trust in the authorities.

In the latest case, villagers tracked down a man known as The Clown, who they believed was behind the murder of local businessman Nicolas Choc on Thursday.

They beat him until he confessed and revealed the names of his five alleged accomplices, who were then also hunted down and shot dead.

Philippine mayor filmed punching sheriff in Davao City

The Philippine authorities are investigating an attack by a city mayor on a sheriff.

Sara Duterte, the mayor of Davao City in the southern Philippines, repeatedly punched the court official, Abe Andres, in the face after he refused to delay the demolition of a slum area.

The attack came during an operation that was marred by clashes between residents and police.

The mayor's actions were filmed by a TV crew and shown on national television.

She said she had wanted the demolition delayed so she could persuade residents to leave peacefully.

The TV footage showed Duterte calmly beckoning the sheriff towards her before punching him twice in the face, before he was restrained by the mayor's aides.

Mr Andres was subsequently taken to hospital, local TV network ABS-CBN reported.

The incident is being investigated by the interior ministry.

Vintage Bugatti bought for £60 auctioned for £430k

A Bugatti racing car bought for £60 in 1950 has been sold at auction for £430,000.

The 1924 type 35 Bugatti was found by Jack Perkins, from Rugby, Warwickshire, at a Nottinghamshire aerodrome and restored to racing condition.

The car raced at Indianapolis 500 in 1936 and the American National Championship races in 1938.

The vintage car was sold at Bonhams' annual auction at Goodwood Festival of Speed in West Sussex.

Engineer Mr Perkins, who died in 1992, continued to race the single-seat car until June 1988 when he was 78.

His widow Jean put the Bugatti on display at the Haynes Motor Museum in Somerset, where it remained exhibited until December 2010.

Autocar magazine has described the Type 35 Bugatti as "the most beautiful racing car of all time".

Another Bugatti at the auction - a 1926 Type 37 Monoposto - sold for £197,000 while a 1954 Aston Martin cabriolet, previously owned by British racing car driver Innes Ireland, sold for £606,500.

The new owner of the Bugatti was not identified.

Greece crisis: Eurozone backs 12bn euros in aid

Eurozone finance ministers have approved the latest tranche of emergency help for the Greek economy.

They are to release about 12bn euros (£10.4bn, $17.4bn) in the next two weeks to help Greece meet payments on its huge debts and avoid bankruptcy.

Earlier this week, the Greek parliament passed tough austerity measures demanded by the European Union and International Monetary Fund.

MPs backed the measures despite angry protests on the streets of Athens.

The EU and IMF have already agreed to provide Greece with a total of 110bn euros in emergency loans, with eurozone finance ministers discussing the details of a second bail-out designed to help Greece pay its debts until the end of 2014.

Greek Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos welcomed the eurozone move, saying it "strengthened the country's international credibility".

He added: "What is crucial now is the timely and effective implementation of the decisions taken in parliament, so we can gradually emerge from the crisis in the interest of national economy and the Greek citizens."
