A U.S. contractor imprisoned in Cuba ended a hunger strike on Friday after eight days of protesting his treatment by the Cuban and U.S. governments while serving a 15-year term for illegally attempting to establish Internet service on the island.

"My protest fast is suspended as of today, although there will be further protests to come," Alan Gross said in a statement. His 91-year-old mother urged Gross, 64, to resume eating, according to a statement released through representatives of his lawyer and family.


Gross was arrested in 2009 while trying to establish an online network for Jews in Havana as a subcontractor for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). It was his fifth trip to Cuba

An organised pro-Russia camp has sprung up outside the security service building in Lugansk, mirroring those in Kiev during its earlier pro-Europe protests.











Many of the pro-Russia protesters in Donetsk and elsewhere believe Ukraine's new government has been captured by the far right.











The mood was not all tense at the barricades in Donetsk though, as a bride and groom visited the pro-Russia rally outside the regional government building.



Bridal wear also made an appearance at an exhibition of Ukrainian art about Kiev's earlier pro-Europe protests, in Vienna, Austria.

A forest fire consumed more than 100 houses in Valparaiso, about 70 miles west of Santiago, Chile, on Saturday. prompting authorities to declare a red alert for the area. There have been no reports of injuries, local authorities told Reuters

Thousands gathered in Rome on Saturday to protest against austerity measures and plans for economic reform. The demonstration turned violent when a group of protesters threw rocks, eggs, and firecrackers at riot police. The police charged the group with batons and used pepper spray against the crowd.

The families of 23 political prisoners who were killed during the Spanish Civil War gathered to give their relatives a proper burial more than 70 years after the conflict at the Valdenoceda cemetery, near Burgos, northern Spain, on Saturday.

More than 150 prisoners in the Valdenoceda prison died from hunger and cold from 1938 to 1943. The remains, once buried in a mass grave, were exhumed and identified before being returned to their families
