Aging One, You have some incredible stories. This should really be in a book. That way I can sort through all the side comments. I sort of got lost on your story. I feel like I am walking in half way through your tale. Actually, I was trying to track down a guesthous called TT near the Bangkok train station (for Road Rash) and could never find the original location. The pre-Khaosan periods always facinated me. Now I am also interested in the other SE Asian countries you visited on the old hippy routes.

If you ever plan on sitting around a table in Bangkok while people buy you rounds as you tell stories, then include me in that group. You can even call me things like "young man", "son", and "whippersnapper" if you like.

Well I was slowly making my way to that point but with the time in between posts becoming weeks I may have to speed it up a little.

Well its Christmas 1979 I think!! Deborah has just informed me she cannot leave on the 2nd of Jan. She has modeling work in Europe. January in Milan, Feb, in Paris, and March in Geneva. Needless I wasnt too happy about it. But then she said she would be making over 30 grand US and would be happy to blow most of it in Asia. So we made a plan to meet the 20th of April in Bangkok. I had reservations for two so gave old Steve Mcginness a call "wanna go again for a bit"? he was up for Kamandu after we found this new place Samui.

Arrived in Bangkok on Jan 4th 1980 the first priority was a train ticket to somewhere named Surat Thani. Got up early and headed for Hualompong station. Its was packed and nothing was in English. So I got in a line and waited, finally got to the front and said "Surat Thani" "My by Thai Tai" What the hell does that mean. Well it meant I had spent 3 hours in the line to go north not south. He was nice enough to write down the number of the correct window.

3 hours later and I had two tickets to Surat leaving at 6pm. We had a bottle of duty free Jack Daniels and thats all we needed. We were off for Samui.

14 hours and a major hangover later we were at Puhping Surat. "Where do we catchthe ferry was our priority. The only words we knew were Samui and we had neglected to buy any kind of phrase book. We finally got to Surat Town about 10am and were not happy to find out that the only boat at that time left at midnight. And arrived a 6am. I was dead and got an airconditioned room and crashed for about 6 hours.

Dinner was an adventure as all the southern curries were so hot, but the barbecued prawns were great.

Finally we loaded onto the boat got a mat to sleep on and were off. The rocking of the boat and a few tokes put me in dreamland.

Soon we were being awakened by the noise of motorcycles and trucks honking their horns we were in Samui. Nathon was nothing just two streets and alot of wood shops. Again we knew no Thai and we were already at Samui so what to do. We went to check out the only restaurant we could find and were told to go to Chai Hat Chaweng.

I could not believe it again it was the ice truck, and again over the hill we came and their it was Chaweng Beach. Nothing nothing at all save sand, coconuts and swaying palms, but the sea oh my god!! Blue and with waves big enough to body surf.

First we had to find a place to stay. I went right onto Chaweng Noi, and Steve went left toward Chewang Yai. I found First Bungalows they had just built the first huts on the beach, and there were 10 of them. Steve found Chewang Guest House but it only had a cement block of rooms, alot like a prison.

We booked into the First Bungalow named because they were the first and still operate to this day with that name. Into the water for a few hours of the best body surfing in a while. Warm water and nice one meter waves, we only found out later that they only exist a few months of the year due to the Monsoon. Camn out for lunch at Chewang guest house. Our waiter was a cute kid about 9 or 10 who spoke decent English. His name was Pae Somwong and his parents owned the guest house. He was the only one in his family that could speak English so he was basically the manager.

We had fried rice, and a nice fish. How do you ask a 10 year old where to get a little herb. I knew the word ganja from the last trip to tried it on him. Little fart started dying laughing and soon was back with some of his dads stash. About 50 grams for 100 baht. The stuff floored us. It was a delight to find out every damn fisherman and local was a toker.

Played around the rest of the day near his bungalows and tried Mekong for the first time that night. Got so drunk I could not smoke anything or I would have been spinning. At that time I didnt smoke cigarettes at at.

Climbed into the bed which had been made since I booked the bungalow, and fell into a sound sleep. A couple of hours later I was awakened by somthing. The damn bed was on fire and the flames were licking up the wall. I grabbed two zip lock bags and ran to the sea and filled them and threw them on the fire, not out, 6 or 8 more and I had killed the fire.

Slept on the beach, and reported it in the morning. I was told I started the fire and would have to pay 1500 baht in damage to the mattress, the wall was okay. What could I do? I paid and checked out and went to Chewang Guest House and checked in. It would be over 3 months before I checked out again. This place was going to change my life, and Pae was destined to become my best Thai friend ever.

I dont have a clue yet how to get Paes pictures up here other than a thumbnail. Dont get me wrong I had great tuition, but just wont take the time to really do it. Plus I get the photoshop stage thrown in and I forgot to take notes. I am gonna get my teacher to come earlier.

Right there is the truth. I cant see them at this time. I have seen them, and will see them again. But not until Marmers Pm's me or comes for dinner. Which isnt too far off.
