Former Stereophonics drummer Stuart Cable found dead

Police say there are no suspicious circumstances in death of drummer on weekend of former band's homecoming gig

Former Stereophonics drummer Stuart Cable. Photograph: Phil Rees/Rex Features The former drummer with the Stereophonics has been found dead less than two days after the band played a triumphant homecoming gig.
Stuart Cable's body was found at his home in Llwydcoed, Aberdare, south Wales, at 5.30am today. Police said there were no suspicious circumstances.
Cable, 40, was a founder member of the band but was sacked in 2003 after arguments about his alleged lack of focus. Known as a party animal who drank heavily and used drugs, he once said fame had turned him into a "coke-taking zombie".
In his autobiography, Demons & Cocktails, Cable described how hard it had been for him at the time of a previous homecoming gig by his former band in Cardiff.
"It hit me like a baseball bat right across my head," he recalled. "I felt incredibly sorry for myself, wanted to curl up into a big, round ball under my blankets until the coast was clear … it was the darkest time of my entire life."
A sell-out crowd of 30,000 turned out for the band's latest return to their native south Wales on Saturday night at Cardiff City stadium.
Cable's mother Mabel, 79, said she was struggling to come to terms with his death. "Stuart has travelled all over the world with the band and I have worried myself silly," she told the Western Mail newspaper in Cardiff. "He is now settled down and then this has happened. It has not sunk in yet."
Tributes flooded in for Cable. The Radio 1 DJ Chris Moyles said he was "very shocked". "He was always lovely when we met. Love to his family and friends. RIP," Moyles said on his Twitter feed.
Mike Peters, the lead singer with Welsh band The Alarm, said: "I will remember him as someone who was so alive. He was always smiling and laughing and great to be around. He had lots of energy and couldn't wait for the next day to come around."
The Welsh comedian and television presenter Rob Brydon, who saw Stereophonics at the weekend, said: "Terribly sad news about Stuart Cable, such a lovely, warm, funny, talented man."
Cable had become a hugely popular presenter with BBC Wales, and made guest appearances on comedy and sports programmes. Steve Austins, editor of Radio Wales, said: "He was an extraordinary man. He was well loved by both colleagues and listeners and he will be deeply missed."
People who lived close to Cable's Tudor-style home said he had been a friendly neighbour. Geraint Hill said: "Stuart was a lovely neighbour and lots of fun. I can't believe he has gone – it is a terrible tragedy."
Terry Davies said: "Stuart was amiable as a neighbour. He would always stop and have a chat if he saw you in the street. It wasn't just music – he would talk about golf and rugby too. We would sometimes hear him on his drums with his new band. But that was very nice. He used to play with his son on the lawn and he was a very caring father. He was always willing to help."
Cable's new band, Killing for Company, had been due to play at Donington Park on Saturday.
At the time of Cable's sacking the Stereophonics frontman, Kelly Jones, said the decision had been "heartbreaking". Jones and Cable lived in the same street in Cwmaman, south Wales, during their childhood.

The dude always reminded me of a young Tom Baker in his Dr Who years.

Creator of Frank Sidebottom, Chris Sievey, dies

BBC News - Creator of Frank Sidebottom, Chris Sievey, dies

Chris Sievey had a tumour on his chest, his agent said The man who played comedian, musician and North West showbiz legend Frank Sidebottom has died.
It is understood entertainer Chris Sievey collapsed at his home in Hale, Greater Manchester, in the early hours.
The 54-year-old was pronounced dead at Wythenshawe Hospital, a spokeswoman confirmed.
Known for his over-sized, papier-mache head, he found fame through a series of TV appearances in the 1980s and remained a popular cult comedy figure.
He had been recovering from treatment to a tumour on his chest, his agent Nigel Round said.
After having limited success with punk band The Freshies, Sievey created the role for which he will be best remembered.
Frank Sidebottom styled himself as an aspiring singer-songwriter from Timperley, south Manchester.
'One of a kind' Often accompanied by his sidekick Little Frank - a glove puppet made in his own image - Frank became a regular face on TV in the 1980s and 1990s.
His TV fame peaked in the early 1990s with his own series Frank Sidebottom's Fantastic Shed Show.
David Behrens, who produced the series, said: "Chris was a genuinely funny and creative comic talent, and he had a huge and loyal base of fans.
"He had been ill recently but his death is terribly sudden and sad.
Mr Behrens added: "He came from a great comedy tradition in refusing to acknowledge his real identity when he was in character.
He never spoke about Chris Sievey, it was all about the character
    Nigel Round Chris Sievey's agent
"As soon as the prop head went on, he'd answer to Frank, never Chris. A real one of a kind."
The comic creation's songwriting skills led to singles and EPs including Christmas Is Really Fantastic, and the Timperley EP.
Despite fading from TV in recent years, Frank continued to perform at gigs.
He appeared on stage only last week, his agent said.
Mr Round said the comedian downplayed the cancer he had been fighting in recent months.
"He always said it was no problem, he was going through treatment but it was being sorted out."
Mr Round added: "He was just a nice bloke. He was quite a private person. He never spoke about Chris Sievey, it was all about the character."
He said Sievey was planning to come out from under the paper-mache mask in the coming years.
"Everyone kept it really quiet. We were probably only 12 months from him uncovering himself," Mr Round said.

    Re: Paul Gray

BBC News - Slipknot bassist Paul Gray died of morphine overdose

The death of Paul Gray, bassist for US metal band Slipknot, was due to an accidental overdose, an autopsy shows.
Toxicology tests showed a fatal level of morphine and fentanyl, a synthetic morphine substitute, in his blood. Police said there was no evidence of a prescription for either drug.
His body was found by an employee at a hotel Des Moines, Iowa on 24 May.
The band, famous for their ghoulish masks, won a Grammy Award in 2006 for the song Before I Forget.
The autopsy also revealed signs of significant heart disease, police in Urbandale, a Des Moines suburb, said.
A spokesman for the Urbandale police said they were trying to find out how Gray obtained the drugs.
The spokesman said charges were possible.
The band formed in 1995 in Des Moines and remained based in the city.
The nine members of Slipknot wore Halloween masks in public and referred to other bandmates by numbers - Gray was number two.

Can't really recall the guy or that very special goal but if Tosh pays a worthy tribute to the man then that's good enough for me.

Many more tributes following at football grounds in England and Wales over the weekend no doubt. RIP Brian

Norman Wisdom dies at the age of 95

Sir Norman Wisdom was renowned for a string of comic roles
Comic actor Sir Norman Wisdom has died aged 95, his son has confirmed.
The London-born star was known for his slapstick film roles in the 1950s and 1960s, famously playing Norman Pitkin against frustrated boss Mr Grimsdale.
Sir Norman became a cult figure in Albania, where his were the only films from the West allowed in the country.
His family said he died at a nursing home on the Isle of Man on Monday evening, having suffered a series of strokes over the past six months.

Continue reading the main story A statement said: "Sir Norman Wisdom has today passed away at Abbotswood Nursing Home on the Isle of Man.
"Over the last six months Norman has sustained a series of strokes causing a general decline in both his physical and mental health.
"He had maintained a degree of independence until a few days ago. However, over the last few days his condition rapidly declined. He was in no pain or distress and peacefully passed over at 1846 on 4 October."
The family asked for time to grieve a "much loved father and grandfather".
    'Delightful man'
Lyricist Sir Tim Rice, who worked with Sir Norman later on in his career, said: "He was a childhood hero of mine, when I was at school.
"So it was very exciting to find that he was one of the few childhood heroes that really lived up to being met in real life. He was just a delightful man, and very funny."

Lyricist Sir Tim Rice on Albania: "Everywhere we went Norman was mobbed"

Sir Norman, who was knighted in 2000, was renowned for a string of comic roles and Charlie Chaplin described him as his favourite clown.
His later work included the recurring role of Billy Ingleton in the long-running BBC comedy Last of the Summer Wine.
Phil Day, who had been his publicist since 1969, said Sir Norman was a "lovely man" who was "100% professional".
He said: "He never turned down any request. He never threw a tantrum. He was 100% professional all of the time.

"Of all the artists I've ever worked with, he's been the closest. It's a sad day."

I loved Norman Wisdom as a child.

I recently found A STITCH IN TIME on DVD in IT Mall, my kids loved it.

I saw him on staghe with freddie Starr in Great Yarmout in the early 70's, one of my earliest real childhood memories.

To be honest I thought he was already dead.

Also, Brian Clarke, I remember walking across to Coryton where he lived to get an autograph. He was out. Only saw him play once along side Bobby Woodruff, I think they beat Preston 5-3.

I also grew up in the Sir Norman era and remember him as one of the favourite slapstick comedians around at the time.

Wherever he is i hope he can find a Mr Grimsdale and amuse those who missed out on his humour.

A fine tribute paid to the man by those who knew him personally.

RIP Sir Norm, you left your gentlemanly mark.
