    Question gutter

i was gonna ask this question on a proper thai builders forum like CoolThailand House, but i thought i'd toss it over to you lot here first

let's assume that you've foolishly purchased half an acre of real estate, and further assume that in a drunken stupor... you'd agreed to build a nice detached house on it...

now the house has been built (waiting for the landscape gardeners to start work), and you've been along to the local amphur town planning office & obtained the licence (bits of paper in Thai with plans & stuff on them)... and the boss of the office, cos he likes handsome farangs takes care of things personally (and doesn't even try & get a tip for his troubles), mentions that it's a requirement to have roof gutters installed.

so the question is, is it a legal requirtement to have roof gutters installed around the buildings perimiter? it's pragmatic for obvious reasons... but must i do it, huh?

How many houses have I seen without roof gutters.

My house in bangkok did not have roof gutters and it got a permit.

Me thinks the boss you spoke with in the land office also owns a gutter making business.

While the local amphur planning office is no doubt often in the gutter, is the boss of the office by chance in the real gutter business?

no, i got the permit alright but i think he said we must have gutters. as far as i know he doesn't have a stake in a local guttering business but i suspect he does have a stake in the local water truck supply company... given the number of time the water mains supply gets cut off round here. i must get one of those water tank thingies installed as bathing in the local klong gets a little crowded at tea-time, what with the kwai herd using it as well ...

I had them put on the house I built in Phetchabun, most do have em there for harvest of drinking water, but i used them to harvest roof water for full house usage because wells there were only 3 meters deep and cesspits are 4.

But I look out my windows here in San Sai and 1 out of 6 have gutters so I think he is bullshitting you or has a stake in something.

A state in Malaysia ( I think Terrengganu) forbids gutters as they are Mosquito breeding grounds unless they are meticulously and regularly ckecked for standing water and cleaned out - (in 1998 anyway.)

I had a local house builder put up a house two years ago, no gutters required on the house, I have since put a concrete gutter on the ground around the exterior of the house as I was worried about roof run off undermining the foundation.

Same here and this is a Land and House development (Major Thai estate developer). He is fishing for a bribe, no doubt!

I know it's human nature especially here, but maybe before incriminating the guy is it possible that the laws have changed since these other houses your comparing to were built or that they might be different in this particular Amphur?

I know where I come from the laws are changing regularly...
Our planning and zoning laws varied considerably in some smaller counties or villages from what was the norm every where else..Keeping the planning and building community up to date on such changes is what the licensing offices job is supposed to be all about...

We're so jaded here it is possible that just for this one time the guy is actually saving you some headaches and problems by letting you know the issues up front..

I have built houses with and without gutters and according to the customers taste. I don't like the look of them but some of my cutomers insist on having them.
I expect he was talking about stormwater drains which I have installed on all the properties and around the perimeter of the land plot.
Absolutely no law regarding attached gutters around the roof line as far as I know.

better off having run off drains on the ground, easier for cleaning, and as was said earlier can be kept mozzie free
