Thread: ripped off or not ?

My mates is getting a 2 meter high wall put round his house. 100 meters total length. He's been quoted BHT 100,000. This is up in the north.

Any knowledgeable opinions ?

We get away with 650 Baht per metre for a single brick 2 M high wall and we buy the materials. Labour is 350 Baht per metre but don't forget the cost of raw materials have gone up by at least 30% in the last six months.

Seems a little expensive but the bloke (the contractor) has to make a profit also.

No maybe my explanation was not clear. Sorry.

Labour equals 350 Baht per metre.
Materials (building blocks, steel rio, cement, etc) equals 300 Baht.

Total= 650 Baht per metre x 2 metres high (single course brickwork)

Paint extra.

We buy container loads of cement bags and lots of other things so we can get the best prices for materials (or so I hope).

130,000. So my mate's getting it cheap at 100,000 for the lot.

No, my direct costs for 100 metres would be 65,000.00 Baht. But again I cut out the middle man. Your mate is paying a fairly standard rate albeit a little high.

Again I dont know the foundations, (and the type of footing soil) but I expect up your way the foundation condition would be rather good. Not sandy and or boggy underfoot.

Oh , ok 650 for a 2x1 meter section. Understood. Don't know about the soil. I assume he's getting a trench dug and some concrete poured.

Are blocks cheaper than concrete panels?

Pre-cast Concrete panels now thats an interesting one.

We are considering to buy these panels and to use as inner shuttering on our next big pool.

A bit of an experiment and will let you know how it all works out cost wise.

Hope it all doesn't fall apart and if you know what I mean.

My mate Smithy in Cairns built a pool with panels.
1. dug hole
2. poured a base
3. poured panels into moulds that lay on the base.
4. lifted panels into place for the walls.
5. sealed it all up and tiled it.

I didn't see the building of it but the finished article looked bloody good.

Like DD you know absolutely fok all about construction.

Sounds good as long as they do a good job of it with deep footing and some good spikes on top. Footing is very important as you would have seen every second fence in Thailand is starting to fall over. If this is with gate and some fance mesh along the front I would say it is a very good price

when is payment made? 100% upon completion? Or in part? If work shoddy or feel like a rip off. Holding back some payment gives you the edge in any given situation.

My experience is that you pay by instalments.
