Ours is a bit OTT with three roller doors, but my builder came up with the astute observation that Thais prefer leaving their carports open for 'look my beemer / benz, etc' while farangs prefer a 'proper' garage.
I felt ours was OTT as well but we wanted something that looked nice and wanted it done correctly to avoid problems later. I went open air for car park area but mine does include the enclosed shop as well to store my tools and work benches

On the proper garage versus open air, many years ago I wondered that very thing. I had heard similar Thais showing off their cars. However asking more about it later on I found that an enclosed garage in Thailand doesn't work well. It allows nature to make a home in it(Snakes, lizards, big Geckos, birds and bats), no air flow causes other issues and humidity does funny things. Foreigners like an enclosed garage to store crap in them, really nothing more. The door stops people seeing you have become a hoarder. . In the US I bet 80% of enclosed garages are full of junk and worthless stuff while they park their cars outside on the street.

Last year we decided to add a car port to the front on the existing garage. Total cost was in the region of 50,000 I think, though this was a DIY type project.

All made in galvanised steel, dynabolted to the existing structure, with the sides clad in overlapping 'smartboard' planks then painted to the house colour.

The front support posts were dynabolted to existing stone clad concrete gate posts.

Used the power to the previous gate post lights for the new lights.

The ceiling is 'smartboard' sheets, with the joints sealed with gypsum, and with 4 LED flat spotlights.

Fairly high ceiling, as the wife insisted it had to not block any part of the shrine.

Roof sheeting is exactly the same as this, our sala at the back of the house.

With the same type of flashing to seal it against the existing wall.

wow PAG, you went to the expense of using galvanised steel and then let them drill it full of holes to screw it all together. Might as well just used normal steel.

Belt and braces I guess. The roof space is totally sealed so no moisture can get in any where. Found the price difference between galvanised and black steel here is so small it's just not worth considering.

I am doing it with same material I built the house with and a matching tile roof( I know a bit over the top but hey I did not want this nice house and a ghetto car park deal. It will have windows through out and sliding glass doors to enter my shop area. Honestly I am doing it up well as I will likely be living in it when the wife kicks me the hell out. Its a lot better then the chicken coop that I was having to consider. At least I will have lights, power, my motorcycle and all my tools. I have an extra little 36inch Samsung TV I might mount out there and move my smaller fridge. I might just have to piss her off so I can go stay in it..
Betty, I would pick JP's brain on this. He has done a great job on his house and now has the needed connections for a proper build. I just wish I had his builder when I was doing my house.

Not so sure that is the reason why carports are more prevalent here. It has more to do with the heat, since an enclosed garage is much like an oven here in Thailand. While living in Arizona for 8 years carports made up over 75% of car storage for that exact reason. Much cooler and the cost savings was secondary.

I think you lot are thinking a bit too grandly for my abode. I'm looking for a slight upgrade from the original car port, not much more...

I thought you said you wanted something that will last. Your last effort looked like camping gear that might last a month or so if lucky.

^ the wife would reverse into that and knock it down.

When I say I want a double car port that's mainly to give her enough space to park in; I don't plan on getting another car...

    ^^ very true.

    An serious question .......

    Seriously .

I put a photo in here of a lovely carport design . Then enhanced it with Roman columns . And actually I like the enhanced version !
But the first photo has disappeared .

I didn't delete it up in Photobucket - and it's not the first time I've found photos just disappearing like that.
Do you know why this happens ?

Photobucket want your money basically. Every time someone opens this thread, that picture loads, and photobucket counts towards your monthly 10 gig of bandwidth per month that a free accounts gives you. Therefore, if you have many other photos in other threads, and each time those threads are opened, the pictures load... and so on. You will find that a certain time of the month that picture will display again until the 10gig is used up at which point it will disappear.

I would suggest using one of the many throw away pic uploads sites for things like the Enhanced Roof picture - for pictures you want to use one time and forget. That way you will not eat up the 10gig bandwidth for more important stuff.

This is what I'm building. I don't want to use timber because there is a 6m span to the house. Just paint it flat black and use grey carbolux for the roof.

    BB,
I recommend one that hangs off the house. Like those awnings deals sort of like this

Aluminum Carport - Traditional - Shed - los angeles - by SUPERIOR AWNING INC

Since you say your wife will take out poles, build up some bricks about 4 feet and the poles will be higher. However your car will take a beating

    Good luck
