Yep, it's open. Wide open...
Root users: Samsung S-Memo is insecurely storing your Google Account credentials
This is a warning for some Samsung Galaxy users out there who have rooted your device: Samsung's S-Memo is not securely storing your Google Account credentials, and because your device is rooted, that data could be at risk.
Apparently, one of the devs over at XDA has found out that S-Memo stores your Google Account credentials in plain text. Under normal circumstances, this shouldn't be an issue, but if you have rooted your device, that information is viewable. It was found on a Galaxy S III, and it seems that the trouble is in having your /data partition readable by any app in the /system partition.
If you have a rooted device, all you need is a SQLite reader, and you'll be able to see the Google Account data which is stored in plain text in a SQLite file. As of yet, this is just a be-aware bit of info, but it is possible that more apps are storing data this way, and it may be something root users need to be wary of in the future.
I turn my back for a second and the All Things Android thread dies?
Time to kick it back to life I think.
Hands up who's using a Custom ROM on their SIII?
What's the best one you've found?
Me so far: Ultima ROM.
Why anyone would keep using Stock when this is available, I have no idea.

And on the Note, SuperNexus is hard to beat.
Anyone else got any good ROM suggestions?
I'm running a stock standard S3.
I have no idea why anybody has the need or desire to fuck with it.
I'm happy with it as is.
It runs all the apps that I want to run. It can even send sms and make calls.
What are these restrictions then Arry?
What are the main benefits you get after all that pissin about ?
Well for a start you can strip out all the Samsung crap at install time if you don't want/use it.
You get a much better battery life.
You get the Camera and other apps from the latest build.
Things like Call recording are included.
A wider range of customisations including custom toggles, inverted apps that look great, a set of new statusbar icons, performance tweaks, etc.
Rooting isn't that difficult, and once you've done it you can basically do an image backup of the phone, or just backup the apps+data, then you can try out a variety of ROMs that are out there (and free).
No need to wait for Samsung's inevitable year-long delay updating to the latest release (that's if they even ever bother once the S4 is out, previous form suggests they won't).
Harry is back.
How's it hangin Harry?
I have barely figured out everything on my stock phone by the time it is almost obsolete and ready to get a new one. I will leave all this rooting nonsense to the obsessed phone fanatics.
I seem to get all the updates automatically anyway. I got an automatic update to my favourite App 'Talking Tom' yesterday while I was at the airport between connections so I was able to while away an hour or so in the terminal with Tom.
Talking Tom?
I thought this was more up your street mate

Thank you Dillinger, I will pass that link on to my shoe obsessed Taiwanese girlie. Went down to the beach with her last weekend and when she opened the boot of her car to get her beach mat there was an entire shoe rack with a selection of 10 pairs of high heel shoes in her boot. She says she can't drive with heels on and also has trouble making up her mind while dressing to go out so she wears comfy shoes to get to her car and then makes her mind up which pair to wear while she is en-route.

I'm still waiting for the jellybean upgrade on my galaxy advance
The comments at the bottom suggest leaving it alone and that's meant to be the official version
Update Galaxy S Advance I9070 to Official Jelly Bean 4.1.2 XXLQ4 OS
The custom rom attracts the same shitty comments
Update Galaxy S Advance to Jelly Bean 4.1.2 with Optimus Droid Custom ROM
You said it yourself in the first paragraph: Your phone is obsolete. Do you really want to keep going out and buying a new one?
The point of most custom ROMs is that you can keep up to date with OS advances without having to buy a new phone.
Your apps will update automatically if you've clicked the "automatically update" box.
Rooting isn't "nonsense for obsessed phone fanatics", it's a fairly routine process to get admin access on your phone so you can just install a ROM on it. Most of the time that involves (a) copying a file to your SD Card, (b) wiping the phone safely using new options in the boot menu (called Recovery); (c) installing the file you copied, and (d) rebooting.
If you want everything back the way you had it, use something like Go Launcher as your default App launcher (my favourite) and Go Backup, which will allow you to backup every detail to your SD card and restore it afterwards.
I have a couple of hundred apps on my Note; the process is simple and takes about 30 minutes.
The thing about being able to update the phone yourself is that you get years more use out of it. Both my Note and SIII are already on Jellybean, and I daresay the S4's new features will probably get ported to the SIII in a matter of months at most.

I can't see the comments, I think one of my plugins blocks Disqus. But from what I can see Optimus Droid seems to get fairly positive ratings. The cockups seem to be from people (a) forgetting to wipe cache and Dalvik cache, and (b) forgetting that the ROM deliberately does not install Google Apps - you have to download these yourself from Goo.im and install them the same way you do the ROM.
There's not a lot of activity on the XDA thread for this ROM, but then again there are no complaints either.

good point, some retards a few months ago made some claims that he could move all his apps to the "extSD" without rooting under Android 4.xx, even though it's not possible since by default the uid of the internal SDcard and extSD card aren't the same and you can't move the "write" protected directory of the "internal SD" apps to extSD.Originally Posted by harrybarracuda
