Apple iPod or Creative Zen Vision?

I'm going to buy one or the other this weekend, I'd like to go for the Creative Zen as it seems a lot more format friendly and I've always liked their products.

Obviously iPod is the more popular choice, so any experience with these two would be helpful.

    Thanks.

Get the Zen, ipuds are crap. Also, you might want to look into a Cowon D2.

Had both and the Zen display died in less than a year though I took very good care of it. I now have an Ipod touch 16 gig and this was a great buy. The online applications are great and I can find wifi signals that my computer doesn't see.

In what way do you claim the Zen is more 'format friendly'? The iPod plays all formats, except Windows Media (which is crap anyway). You can play MP3, MP4, AAC (same as MP4), of course Apple's AAC format, and even AIFF and Apple lossless; Ditto with video formats, again, except for Windows media.

iTunes can handle converting any format to a compatible format once you configure it.

Aside from being sturdy and well-built, the iPods also have the advantage of giving you an established ecosystem of accessories, and additional software - and the iPod Touches have the best display, WiFi access, and of course access to the Apple iTunes App Store to allow you almost infinite expansion and add ons via Apps.

It really depends on what you want to do with your iPod - there's just the regular iPods, iPod nanos, iPod Shuffle, and the iPod Touch. If you want video, just get an iPod Touch, and don't look back. You won't regret it.

The Zen has nothing in that respect.

Been fairly happy with my iPod. Bought it refurb from the Apple store and its lasted longer than most of my friends ones they bought new.

I love my Apple stuff but Im by no means an evangelist, there are some real good MP3 players around it just depends on budget/capacity and a bit of reading up. Creative arent top of my list to be honest, Ive had a few friends whove bought them and been disappointed with them, Archos arent bad then you've got SanDisk, Cowon, Sony, Samsung, iRiver and even the turd coloured Microsoft Zune which you can probably get a great deal on as they aren't that popular.

I bought a Ipod Touch recently and like it a lot. The wi-fi is great. I carry it around mostly for that. It does a nice job playing youtube videos.

Well as I use Windows XP and would like to load said player sometimes without the hassle of conversion using WMV files would be a benefit.

There's no hassle - iTunes takes care of things really transparently.

Not sure about the new versions, but the sound was much better on the Zen than ipod.

^That's most likely because you use the supplied white earphones like all the trendy idiots, they are crap, but at least you're fashionable.
But seriously, it really depends what you do with your MP3-player.
If you like to install loads of gadgets, buy legal MP3 via iTunes then ofc you should go for an IPod. If, however, you mainly use your player for downloaded MP3, filetransfer from a friends pc, memorystick or if you're a winamp user then another player, like the Sandisk Sansa Fuse (I own one) is much cheaper and better:

I bought a Creative zen in '05 and it froze an hour after I bought it, no way to reset so I took it back and got another. That did the same thing so took it back again, paid the extra and bought an Ipod which is still going strong today.

There is a reason why ipods are the majority player and a lot of cars makers advertise the stereos to have ipod connections. range of accessories is huge as well.

    No at all.

Being a former sound engineer and using my own Grado headphones on both when i tested it, the Zen was much better.

At the end of the day it's personal preference.

Can't dispute the features on ipod, or its marketing, but has far as audio is concerned, audio qaulity was the priority for me.

Idiot maybe, trendy, not at all.

^Hehe ok, good on you. However both the ipod and Zen have by far a good enough sound quality for the vast majority of earphones or even speakers in use.
And especially the supplied white earphones that come with an iPod are so bad that I constantly wonder how people can even start to debate about sound quality.

^Yes i agree, the headphones are the weakest link. Grado do an excellent upgrage for about 30-40 quid. Well worth it.

The sound quality from the Sony Walkman MP3 and phones is the best IMHO. Their earphones are far superior to many of the aftermarket sets available and shit all over the stock iPod ones.

Like I said, I use the Sandisk Sansa Fuze... drag&drop usb with any pc, use your winamp playlist by simply copying it onto your Fuze... similar screen as Ipod Nano.. depends on how you use it really. I'm no fan of too many features you can't handle and neither am I an iTunes user.

Yes the Fuze does look very good, I'm not interested in video just audio so screen res is not an issue, plus the memory can be added to with SDHC cards and the addition of a radio (which can be recorded from ) is great... SanDisk Sansa Fuze review - IT Reviews

I do quite like it, the only downside to is if you have tons of MP3 with incomplete or wrong meta-data you have to create a playlist. But that's the case with every modern MP3 player that doesn't just use windows folder mode anymore.
I use it to listen to music and exchange it conveniently with friends, and for that it's much better than an iPod.

So how does the radio record function work? Is it only for the internet type radio stream that can be recorded or can you record FM too? Would be great to capture radio sessions, just the thing you'd want to be at home to do but are usually at work, and then transfer the audio file over to the laptop.

Great value for money too it seems, PC World are doing an 8gb with a 4gb sdhc for £65.

I think my mind is made up to the question; iPod or Creative? Neither thankyou.

Now my dilema is, does the great value price of the Fuze justify me spending £100 on a pair of Shure E3c headphones..?

    I bought myself an I-Muz 905 4gb.

Very happy with it, just not happy with the 8 hour battery life.
