    Free File Backup Tool Wanted

Have done a search on TD and can't find a tool to do what I want.

There are a few folders and files I want to backup on a regular basis. Specifically music files and some work files. I have a USB external drive I use for backup. When I copy from my hard drive to the external drive, I only want to replace files which are newer than the last back up to reduce the time it takes to xfer from hard to external disc.

Does anyone know of a free download tool which allows this. Or is there an, unknown to me, feature in XP that lets me do this?

Mozy is an online backup tool that allows both Windows and Mac users to back up their data to an off-site server.

With the free version of Mozy, a user can back up as much as 2 GB of data from up to two computers (referring others to Mozy gives free users an additional 0.25 GB of storage space). The paid version allows unlimited backups from one computer.

I've been using Mozy for approx 1 year and have 47 GB backed up.

If my apartment catches fire or gets burgled then I still have backups.

Looked at that. Doesn't do what I want. Thanks anyway.

Used a program a few years back called Lap Link. It allowed one to specify to only back up files that have changed. I'm looking for something like that.

Thanks. Prefer to keep the stuff local. Besides, my music files alone are over 100gbytes.

I am semi computer literate and this may be a great solution but I couldn't find my ntbackup if it hit me in the face.

    BTW have fun at Nana.

Thanks for the offer. Next time up your way will pick one up. Won't do me much good but you'll have a good excuse to go see the cuties.

Allway Sync: Free File Synchronization, Backup, Data Replication, PC Sync Software, Freeware, File Sync, Data Synchronization Software

Downloaded and tested. Works fantastic. Does exactly what I wanted. Thanks to all. It would also be great for synchronizing a notebook and PC data base.

It cut one hour of copy (from hard drive) and paste (to external) time to about 10 minutes by using the sync function. Only files that have changed on either drive are updated to latest.

    free backup tool

ur way of backup is just copy the files to the external hard drive.
actually a backup tool is to backup the files to an image, and when u need the files u can restore the image to the internal hard drive.
easeus todo backup is a freeware that i've been using, it can also automatically delete the old image files to save space.

Windows Backup will do differential or incremental backups.

    Look again.

The Windows Backup (Microsoft Backup) program supports five methods of backing up data on your computer or network.
    • Copy backup. A copy backup copies all selected files but does not mark each file as having been backed up (in other words, the archive attribute is not cleared). Copying is useful if you want to back up files between normal and incremental backups because copying does not affect these other backup operations.
    • Daily backup. A daily backup copies all selected files that have been modified the day the daily backup is performed. The backed-up files are not marked as having been backed up (in other words, the archive attribute is not cleared).
    • Differential backup. A differential backup copies files created or changed since the last normal or incremental backup. It does not mark files as having been backed up (in other words, the archive attribute is not cleared). If you are performing a combination of normal and differential backups, restoring files and folders requires that you have the last normal as well as the last differential backup.
    • Incremental backup. An incremental backup backs up only those files created or changed since the last normal or incremental backup. It marks files as having been backed up (in other words, the archive attribute is cleared). If you use a combination of normal and incremental backups, you will need to have the last normal backup set as well as all incremental backup sets in order to restore your data.
    • Normal backup. A normal backup copies all selected files and marks each file as having been backed up (in other words, the archive attribute is cleared). With normal backups, you need only the most recent copy of the backup file or tape to restore all of the files. You usually perform a normal backup the first time you create a backup set.

Or if you just want to keep two folders synchronised, follow Mid's advice:

Download Details - Microsoft Download Center - SyncToy 2.1
