    imovie compression/conversion issue

I posted this in the iDVD section of the Mac support forum a coupla weeks back and it has had no reply.

I'm getting errors and other bad news hours into a burn which is an hour long i-movie project but features AVI clips taken on a snapshot camera - could this be the problem, and if so - how come i-DVD has a problem with it but i-movie accepts the files okay?

For big i-movie projects I often make the i-movie in two or three separate chunks and compress the second and third parts as Quicktime files and add them as huge clips at the end of the original i-movie file. I have not had major problems with this before.

I tried exporting the movie back into the camera onto DV cassette and on the flip out screen on the camera there was sound but no picture.

I tried converting the AVI files using Visualhub only to find that the AVI files nestled amongst the DV clips in the imovie project had the DV affix anyway when dragged onto my desktop.

This is a long shot, but maybe one of you knows the problem... I will copy and paste all this and re-post it in the isupport forum in the imovie section and keep my fingers crossed.

My advice: Just keep movin' straight ahead. Every now and then you find yourself in a different place."

I-movie is open resolution were I-DVD is not as open, so I would assume the problem is caused by the Avi codex (I wont bore you with the technical). I'm not familiar with I-move or I-DVD but with Avid I will always export the film as an mpeg-4 or similar file and then burn that on to a DVD. Trying to layoff to the DV cam could be a multitude of errors. And as a general rule post converting files can throw up even more problems i.e re match source, match frame, resolution errors etc etc.

you need to optimize the throughoutput rate for the kind of media you are going to use,

iMovie and iDVD are hopless software, you are playing with consumer toys for making professional videos, it can't work

QuickTime is also crap, so at the end you should get rid of all that non-sense Mac crap, you will feel liberated and get some real work done instead of fooling around with a toy

I'd download and try something like Final Cut Express, iMovie and iDVD are aimed more at home movie makers sending a DVD to the grandparents.

^ Yes this is true, but I've had loads of work from it and don't have the time to learn FCP - that said there is a guy I know who will trade FCP tutorials with Photoshop tutorials but it's just getting FCP, it's 80,000 baht - can I really download it for free???
    ?

Then there's investing the time to learn it, but I suppose it is an investment.

You could always get it from a torrent and try it, if you dont get on with it then youve saved 80,000 bt. If you like it then you can wrestle with your conscience at a later date.

Maybe I can kill two birds with one stone and ask Apple or Panasonic to sponsor me.

I must have pushed i-move 06 beyond far beyond it's limits for which it was designed, maybe Steve Jobs would be interested to know that TV programmes are being made on imovie, whaddaya reckon and how would I contact the head of Apple Asia?

^^I've got a contact for Google asia. Maybe they know each other. We had a big asian computer geek function in our restaurant and a lot of the top computer experts were there from the big companies. It was quite depressing as the oldest one was probably about 22.
