Yes, in the US they have this. Fucking annoying and loud.

Thanks for the explanation, and yes I was suspecting the extra current was fixing it. But it's not temporary as sometimes I have left the handset for months and never had interuption when raining. I did a test by hanging up and then suddently the ADSL line dropped, that after months of leaving the handset next to the phone.

That is weird, ToT has a concession so they own the cables and exchanges.
My TT&T line was installed by ToT staff, and I get a separate monthly bill of around 100 Baht from ToT for the line.
My thoughts exactly. So I had the choice of getting a new line installed for free from ToT that might not work, or stick with TT&T who said "No problem".

My telephone bills for my TT&T line come in a ToT envelope and are written on ToT headed paper. But if I don't pay at a 7/11 and go to a ToT office to pay, they tell me to go to TT&T.

We have that noise in Phrae.
It starts off quiet and gets louder and louder.
    Does it stop eventually ?

Sorry, it's called "Howler" or "Receiver off-hook tone", not "Alert tone". I think it lasts for 15 minutes, but not sure.

I will be moving into my new home in the next two weeks and will be looking for a phone connection and broad band, who should I pick as my phone company, compatible with a reasonable priced, speed broad band connection.

Same here. Strictly speaking, ToT DO own them - TT&T have no physical lines of their own... but they are responsible for the operation and maintenance, so I guess that is why ToT refuse to handle the issue.

Thanks for the advise, I have found several other people with the same recomendation, I have had a look at the Loxinfo site and the more I look the more I realise that I will not be able to get broad band, it will probably be dialup until the exchanges are updated, how will I manage, I have been using 8 Mb for over a year.
I supose this is a small price to pay for living in Los.

Jumbo, you don't mention where in Thailand you are... your choices vary quite considerably depending on this, as does the service from the same company.

The copper cable they use is cheap shite but i once had problems and they replaced the cheap cable for some proper stuff that had a yellow stripe along its black outer core.
My speed went up 200% instantly, they only changed about 300meters of wire.
I never see them using this cable that they gave me, just the normal stuff that is black colour and has a flat cross-section like a "8".

Thanks everyone for your great feedback. I've opted for CSLoxinfo and they're going to install the service next week. I chose them mainly because:
    1. they answered the phone when I rang.
    2. they didn't tell me I had to call someone else (like Buddy, JNet and others).
    3. they can deliver within 5 days.
    4. they confirmed all their prices that are advertised on the internet and even told me that I should expect some slowdown on international connections unless I'm prepared to pay more for a SME (business-like) connection which costs a lot more.
    5. the Thai girl sounded really cute and really struggled to speak English but we had a bit of a laugh.

I'm going for the 512/256 which is about 850 a month. Not too bad if it works well.
The truth is out there, but then I'm stuck in here.

Got a call from TT&T yesterday asking if I still have a 'speed problem', which I'd complained about several times since upgrading. Nope, running along nicely at around 45/45 thank you.

She asked me some questions about my usage (virtually 24/7) then suggested if I want a better speed, to disconnect the router for 10-30 minutes. I took that to mean switch it off or disable my connection, but she said no, disconnecting it from play is not enough, and that it should be physically disconnected from the power supply.

Fair enough, called mrs k and told her to do the honours. Called again 30 mins later and told her to reconnect, switch on and boot utorrent. Then asked how it was going and was staggered when she said 95/80! When I returned a couple of hours later it was poodling along in the high 80s / high 60s, and has been running at no less than 50 in each direction since.

Tip: Periodically disconnect your router...don't know the tech bits but bottom line has it working wonders.

I used to have CSLoxinfo with my TOT line. Occasional problems, but a zillion times better than fucking Maxnet (TT&T).
In what area Maxnet suxxs for you ?

    don't listen to Marmite.

I think he has sorted it out now.
problem was probably a dodgy telephone line.

Maxnet is not bad at all.

Agree, and I was never disappointed with their service or the "hotline" (I've called them only one time and get the appropriate help even though the girl didn't spoke english) for two years now.

Juste before i came back to my homecountry I went to their Panthip Chiangmai office to pay the bill for the few months I'll be here. The girl at the counter offered me to lower my speed connection during this time and bring up back to 1024/512 when I'll be back so I'll save a couple of thousand bahts. A nice act of kindness and clever sense of marketing.

Apart the problems appearing when raining I'm satisfied with Maxnet Chiangmai, and I don't live in the city.

honestly, the raining problems don't happen if you take your phone off the hook.

The midget is indeed correct. My Maxnet has apparently been sorted out now. I've not been home for a couple of weeks so I'll not find out for sure until the weekend.
